The teachers’ examination held
here on J tine JO 20, brought a large
crowd of people into our city. Tbe
examination was conducted by
County School Commissioner Fos
ter, who has been kept very busy
ever since grading the papers.
This examination was somewhat
different from the ones held here¬
tofore, in that it was more practi¬
cal. State School Commissioner
Pound’s purpose in preparing the
questions assigned was to test the
actual fitness for teaching, rather
than the teachers’ memory of text
book matter.
This departure from the conven¬
tional examination is to be com
mended, as it is not at all unusual
for cue to be able to answer text
book questions, and yet have little
conception ot the “common sense”
of teaching. The future policies
of the State School Commissioner
can readily be seen from the ex¬
tract of his report to the legisla¬
ture published elsewhere in this
paper

The protracted services now in

church are being largely attended
by the people of our city, and
much interest is being manifested
Rev. John B. Gordon, the pastor,
assisted by Rev. W. A. Cleveland,
of Cartersville, are conducting the
services. The meetings are held
at nine o’clock in the mornings

Probably no minister visiting

LET’S ORGANIZE
A BALL TEAM
With All Home Members —Will
Some Enthusiastic Fan Take
the Lead?
Now that the baseball season is
upon us and as we have the mate¬
rial right here at home-for a good
team, a club should be organized.
He already have the inclosed
grounds and we believe Coving! on
could put a good team on the dia¬
mond. If properly organized and
managed, we see no reason why a
winning team could not be mam
tained by tbe receipts taken in at
the gate.
Baseball is tbe ^National game,
and is easily the most popular
sport of the day. It will afford
entertainment for our people these
hot afternoons, and we believe the
games would be well attended.
Not only would the games afford
amusement to our people, and
clean healthy sport to those who
play, but a good team that could
win games, would be an advertise
ment for our city. Series of games
could easily be arranged with L
thonia, Conyers, Madison, Mumoe
Winder, Greensboro Bo6tw'iek,
Mansfield Newborn, Eatontou,
and Mi Hedge ville.
We would suggest the following
team and their positions: Lee lb;
Clay, 2b; I'errell, 3b ; Franklin, C ;
Stilwell, P; Robinson, ss; Adams,
If; Bonnell, cf; Johnson, rf; with
Moore, Miller, Matthew*, and
Shepherd as substitutes. It might
be necessary to employ two or three
players, but this could be done
wi*h little or no expence to the
management, as often times good
players can be secured fir their
expenses.
Let the lovers of the game get
together and take steps to perfect
the organization and arrange to fi¬
nance the club. We would like to
hear from some of the fans ou this
subject, and we stand ready and
willing to aid this .move in any
way that we can. Will some one
else join us?
