COVINGTON, GA., FRIDAY, AUG., 7, 1908.
Eatomtom Baseball Club
Here for Th-ee Games.
Tbo Covington baseball team has
returned from McDonough where
they succeeded in winning two out
of three games from the Henry
county boys this week, and will
play the fast Eatonton team three
games, Thursday, Friday and Sat¬
urday, on the CovicgtoD diamond.
The locals are putting up some
mighty good ball these days, and
as the Eatonton bunch has the
reputation of defeating some of the
best teams in the State and seldom
lose a game, three most interesting
games are promised the lovers of
the great National game in Cov¬
ington this week. Come out and
enjoy yourself for a couple of hours
and root for Covington.
Bond Election.
Elsewhere in this issue will be
found an order for a bond election
for the purpose of erecting and
epuipping a system of waterworks
and sewerage for the City of Cov¬
ington.
The election is called by the
Mayor and Council for September
10th. The amount of bonds to be
issued is $60,0C0 00.
Owing to the fact that the notice
of the election was not made pub¬
lic until just belore we were pre¬
paring the forms for the press, we
have not the space to give a full
account of the advantages we be¬
lieve a town the size of Covington
will derive from a waterworks aud
sewerage system, but will do our
best in our next issue.
Mr, Cohen Off to Market.
Mr. W. Oihen, one of our popu¬
lar and enterprising merchants,
leaves Sunday for the North and
East to buy bis Fall stock of dry
goods, notions aud millinery. Mr.
Cohen informs us that this year
he will buv one of the most up to
date line of goods ever displayed
under one'roof in this city. He is
a shrewd buyer, and goes in search
of bargains for his many customers
in this aud enjoining counties. It
is not necessary to expatiate upon
the merits of the goods handled
by Mr. Cohen, for all know that
quality and price are of the first
importance, and he goes after both.
Besides being a good business man
Mr. Cohen is an excellent citizen
and neighbor, always ready to aid
the town in any public enterprise.
Card of Thanks.
We wish to thank the many
friends who have assisted us and
sympathized with us in our sor
row. They have helped us to bear
the burden, and we wish that by
their unselfish service they may be
strenghteced for all ot life, and
that they may reap the rewards of
Christian fellowship.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Henry Odom
Mr. C. E. Cook, treasurer of the
Covington Telephone Co., is ready
to pay the stockholders of the
company for their stock certi¬
ficates .
We understand, however, that
the par value of the certificates
are not being paid in full, as the
managers of the local company
have given bond for the protection
of any suit that may arise aganinst
the company to the Southern Bell
Tel. and Tel. Co., who recently
purchased the local phone com¬
pany of this city.
Mr, Cook is paying $20 to the
stockholders for each share held,
holdup $5.00 in order to protect
the managers and the Southern
Bell Co., from any suit that might
come up.
New Lodge of Odd Fellows.
Last Thursday night District
Deputy A. H. Milner, assisted by
the degree staff of the local lodge
of Odd Fellows, instituted a lodge
of that Fraternity at Snapping
Shoals, conferiing the degrees on
18 candidates and starting the
lodge with a membership of 21.
The following officers were elect¬
ed and installed: Dr. Jno. H. Ran¬
dall, Noble Grand ; T. D. Joyner,
Vice Grand ; H. C. Hooper, Sec¬
retary ; W. V. Veal, Treasurer.
This makes four strong, flourish¬
ing lodges of Odd Fellows now in
Newton county, and none of them
have begun life with brighter pros¬
pects than does Snapping Shoale.
Through the courtesy of the Ma¬
sonic Lodge at that place the new
lodge will, for the present, meet
in the hall of that fraternity.
Newton Co. Fire Ins. Co.

The Editor of the Enterprise
thanks the Farmers Union and the
citizens of Aloova for an mvita
tiou to attend the barbacue and all
day gathering held last Tuesday,
also for the invitation of the good
people of Snapping Shoals and
Rocky Plains district to attend the
annual Sunday School Celebration
held at the Shoals on Wednesday.
It was impossible for us to get
away from our busy work and
therefore we could not forego the
pleasure.
Writing heavy editorials, keep¬
ing books, reporting news, making
up f^rnis, doing job work, reading
pioofs, soliciting advertisements,
canvassing for job work, collect*
iiig, entertaining company, plan¬
ning and pulling for better things
for the paper, the city and county,
keeping the boys busy in the shop,
doing the fighting and 334 more
duties, keeps one mediocre fellow
a-wigg’ing to have a clean bill
each night.
Gentlemen, we thank you for
the invitations and are very sorry
indeed that it was not our pleas¬
ure to be with you on these de¬
lightful occasions.

Emory College Endowments.
Notable among recent m.ove
meuts to extend and build up valu¬
able college endowments, is that
organized and now being actively
pushed in behalf of Emory College,
at Oxford, Ga.
Emory trustees have not con¬
tented themselves with merely
issuing an address announcing
their purpose to add $300,000 to
that institution’s present' endow¬
ment of approximately $200,000,
and audio,Siting tjyn sitting down indifferently
for the returns to
come in.
They inaugurated the campaign
by raising nearly $100,000 among
themselves, then opened centrally
located headquarters in the Candler
building in Atlanta, in charge of
an energetic and enthusiastic
graduate of the institution Granett
W. Quillian, who is acquainting
the people of the state with the
project and arousing their interest
in it.
The institution and its purposes
are a sufficient guarantee that con¬
tributions to this fund will be used
in the furtherance of lofty aims
and the attainment of valuable
results.
But however great and worthy
a cause, its success is measured
chiefly by the good hard work
that is applied to the attainment.
It is this element that Emory’s
trustees have not overlooked, and
there is no doubt about the fact
that they are going to get that
$300, 000.
With a half million endowment
and the expansion which will come
with it, Emory will take a stand
i among the foremost educational
j institutions of its class in the
go uth.
