KILLED HOGS BY
THE WHOLESALE
Squire Hays Tells an Inspiring
Story of Hog and Hominy
Squire F. M. Hays, of Hays
district, was in the city last week
mingling with his friends.
Mr. Hays has just received his
new commission as justice of the
peace in his district, and when his
term for which ibis commission
covers, has expired, he will have
served hie people in this capacity
for more than forty years, which
is certainly a long tenure in office,
although it is said that no man
ever held the scales of justice more
evenly balanced than he does.
Judge Hays says that on Wed¬
nesday of last week in his neigh¬
borhood there was a general hog
j killing time, seventeen porkers
being slaughtered at one time and
scalded in one place. The aggregate
weight of these porkers, net, being
something over 4,000 pounds.
Judge Hays has plenty' of his
own meat for next year, besides
having an abundance of every¬
thing else grown on a farm to keep
him independent, as he has been
for many yeais.
He is one of Newton county’s
most substantial men and a credit
to it.
Foley’s Orino Laxative cures
chronic constipation and stimulates
the liver. Onno regulates the
bowels so they will act naturally
and you do not have to take purga¬
tives continuously. Sold by C. C.
Brooks.
W. S. Thomas, a substantial col¬
ored farmer living on Covington
Route 2, visited The Enterprise of¬
fice this week and paid his score
and then subscribed for another
year. He says that while his crop
was not just what it should have
been this year, that he has made
enough of everything to do him,
paid up everybody and had enough
left for The Enterprise and to
with next year. He is an intelli¬
gent and hard working colored
man, and otib that The
appreciates as a friend aud a
er. It is creditable that Newton
county has so many thrifty and
progressive colored farmers within
her borders, for they are good cit¬
izens.

malaria. 25c at all drug store.
Mr. Shepherd Dead
The many friends of Mr. J. O.
Shepherd will regret to learn of his
death, which occurred at bis resi¬
dence at Fitzgerald, Ga., on Sun¬
day, Gth, inst. His remains weie
brought to this place on Monday
and interred in the _city cemetery.
Mr. Shepherd was a former cit¬
izen of this plapo, having mer¬
chandized here for thirty years.
He was very kind-hearted and lib¬
eral in all enterprises for the ad¬
vancement of his home town. It
was in a large measure due to his
liberabty that we now have the
splendid graded school building.
Mr. Shepherd leaves a large
number of friends and relatives to
mourn his death. He leaves a
wile and two children, to whom
the sympathy of our community
goes.—Social Circle Sentry.
The above will be eaddeuiug to
the people of this community Mr.
Shepherd was well known in this
city. He has valuable real estate
here; and a host of friends to
mourn his death.—Mansfield
