That there is a restlessness in many
hearts born ot a desire to see the princi¬
ples of Christ w»rk better than they do,
cannot be denied. “In His Steps,” by its
enormous circulation, proved this- Our
own hearts witness to it. The tone of
the pulpit all around deplores the falling
short. It is hard for us to escape making
Christianity a sys'em of goodness. No
informed person can dispute that Chris¬
tianity aims at making men better, and
u'timately, perfect, for the kingdom of
God is to eliminate the unfit, but is
Christianity now a system ol goodness? If
so, many earnest but weak mortals are in
despair.
It cme to make saints, but what ».re
saints? Je-us is the best authority on the
subjt-cf Whom did he draw around him?
Sinners, publicans, swearers, prostitutes.
What was the difference between them
alter they erme and before? Pet 6 i- fell.
Paul said he could feel the most terrific
warfare. What is onr experience? Is
the Chris ian any better than before? The
moment lie thinks so he has fallen below
all. To be fair to Dr. Abbott’s argu
ment we must quote further,
It is true that you have sinned; but
it is not true that you have alienated
your Father’s affections, or that you
need to fast or sacrifice t > win them
back. They are too deep and strong
and spontaneous to he alienated by
anything you can do. You n< ed not
fait; 30 a need not offer sacrifice. If
you want 13 live a clean, sweet, sar
