ligSELV WRITES ON
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE,
Says It Stands For All That Is
Good. Denies Attacks on
Marriage Beliefs.
Macon, Sopt. 2/th, 1909.
EDITORS COVINGTON NEWS'.
I am informed that by the method
f wresting sentences and clauses
" and Health” out of
“Science
,beir normal and explanatory setting,
' them in contrast with
ud by putting selected from the
similarity passages
Bible, that Christian Science is being
misunderstood and misrepresented in
vour community. As every well in¬
formed person knows, that a method
similar to this is employed by scoffers
and infidels to make the Bible seem
contradictory to itself. For example,
in the first chapter of Genesis it is
81 id that man is created in the image
aud likeness of Good, and in the sec¬
ond it is stated that man Is created
from the dust of the earth. Now the
reasonable and fair way is to see what
is really meant and referred to in
each account of creation (Christian
Science says that the first chapter re¬
fers to the real spiritual creation and
the second to the material sense of
creation,) and in a similar manner all
things that are contrasted with each
other must be interpreted in the light
of their most reasonable instead of
their most unreasonable meaning.
I am also informed that Christian
Science has been referred to as
“Eddyism.” While Mrs. Eddy is the
discoverer of Christian Science and
the beloved leader of the movement,
Christian Science claims to be nothing
more nor less than Scientific Chris¬
tianity. It is no “ism;” it is the
Truth about God’s all-power, pres¬
ence, love care and about the living,
active, loving Christ that heals the
sick and makes free from all forms
and types of evil. The very fact that
the reading and study of Christian
Science with the sole purpose of un¬
derstanding it, heals the sick, takes
away the desire for whiskey and brings
great spiritual light, joy and peace,
and that the reading of the misinter¬
pretations and criticisms of Christian
Science do not bring similar and ben
elicieut results, ought to open people’s
ejes to see that Christian Science

contains a great truth which its crit¬
ics have as yet not seen.
Reverting to the consideration of
the unfairness o' taking sentences
and clauses from “Science and
Health” out of their setting and put¬
ting them in contrast with similarly
selected passages from the Bible, I
desire to show how misleading this
method is. For example, a passage
was taken from the Bible referring to
the fact that all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God. In con¬
trast to this it is stated that Christian
Science says that man is incapable of
sin. The teaching of Christian
Science that man is incapable of sin
refers to the man who is in the image
and likeness of God, the man born of
the Spirit, that is, born of God; it is
the same teaching that is found in the
Bible: “Whosoever is horn of God
does not commit sin; for his seed re
maineth in him; and he cannot sin
because he is born of God.” Of
course all mortals sin and Christian
Science makes this just as plain as
does the Bible. It is not true that
Mrs. Eddy teaches that God is not a
person. She teaches that He is an
infinite, but not a finite personality, a
spiritual and not a physical personal¬
ity. When Mrs. Eddy says that there
is no matter, she does not say that
there are no earth and no heavens;
she simply means to say that the real
earth and the real heavens, while we
entertain a material sense of them,
are after all spiritual and not mate¬
rial. In like manner every quotation
that has been used against Christian
Science has been given in its wrong
light. Christian Science when right¬
ly understood is a deeply spiritual,
vital, healing and reformatory asser¬
tion of Christianity; and those who
do not understand its teachings had
best judge it as it is understood by
those who can at least demonstrate it
in part and not as it is misunderstood
by its hostile critics. It takes love
and sympathy to understand anything
true and beautiful and good, and the
fighting and critical state of mind al¬
ways has and always will miss the
truth that is revealed to the meek,
the loving and the humble. There
are too many ignorant to teach, too
many sick to minister to, too many
sad to be comforted, and too much to
do in the way of castingoutthe beams
out of our own eyes for auy of us to
leave these simple and Chrfstly duties
and activities for the false judging world of
anything that is at work in the
for the alleviation of sin, sorrow' and
suffering. J. R. Mosley,

NEW BEAL ESTATE
FIRM FOR CITY.
Corporation Will Be Composed of
Leading Business Men Who
^ ill Make Strong Team
A new corporation is being organ¬
ized in this city, application for char¬
ter appearing on another page of to¬
days paper. The new company is
composed of Mayor Clias. G. Smith,
Dr. N. Z. Anderson, and Col. J. C.
Knox, one of the city’s leading at¬
torneys.
The name of the new company w'ill
be The Realty and Abstract Company
and they will handle and abstract all
kinds of real estate and investments,
both in the city and county.
All these young men are w T ell known
to the business world of this section
and all of them enjoy an exception¬
ally good patronage in their respec¬
tive lines of business,. Mr. Smith is
Mayor of the city, Dr. Anderson is a
successful physician and president of
the First National Bank, while Mr.
Knox is the junior partner of the firm
of Middlebrook, Rogers & Knox.
With their business ability and repu¬
tations for square dealing with the
people we have no doubt but that
they will do a splendid business from
the start.
When you need anything in their
line give The Realty and Abstract
Company a call. They already have
a lot of property listed and will be
glad to have you see them.
COMMISSIONERS
MET YESTERDAY
Regular Monthly Business Attend¬
ed to and Nothing of Extra¬
ordinary Importance.
The Board of County Commission¬
ers met in the court house yesterday
morning and transacted the regular
monthly routine of business, there be¬
ing nothing of note except regular
work. A report from the road gang
showed that they were doing some
permanent work out in the Downs
district and that the patch squad were
also doing some effective work at dif¬
ferent places in the county.
The bills from the different men
were audited and in most cases order¬
ed paid, except where there was an
error.
Attending the meeting were all the
commissioners with Chairman J. Z.
Johnson, presiding.
While there has been some talk of
Newton county having a traction en¬
gine to be used with her road work
there was nothing definite done by
the commissioners yesterday. The
advisability was discussed we under¬
stand, but the commissioners think
that the mules the county now has is
sufficient at present.
Their next regular meeting will be
held on the first Tuesday in Novem¬
ber.
A Bank With a $200,000.00 Doposit.
The Bank of Covington, one of the
leading financial institutions of New¬
ton county, furnishes a statement of
that popular bank for the information
of our citizeus in another part of this
paper. This is probably the best
showing ever made by any bank in
this county. No bank in this section
has made more rapid advancement
since its organization in 1901 with a
capital stock of $50,000. Today the
capital stock paid in is $100,000, with
deposits running beyond the two
hundred thousand dollar mark. The
Cashiers are very popular among otir
people, and much of the bank’s suc¬
cess is due to their excellent manage¬
ment and business ability.

WHAT CHRISTIAN
SGIENGE TEACHES.
Beliefs About Christ, Marriage and
Many Other Fundamentals of
the Different Churches.
The press all over the country re¬
cently have had quite a good deal to
say regarding Christian Science and
its teachings. In recent issues of this
paper there have appeared articles
about it and replies from different
people to the articles. We publish
below what seems to us as the best
article we have seen on it, it being
written by George Milmine in Scrib¬
ner’s Magazine. He goes into the
teachings thoroughly and states that
he backs up his assertions from the
recognized authority on the subject,
“Science and Health.”
There are a great many people who
do not know what Christian Science
really teaches and we give this for
their benefit;
MRS. EDDY DENIES THE ATONEMENT.
When she comes to the Atonement,
Mrs. Eddy says that Christ did not
come to save mankind from sin, but
to show us that sin is a thing imagin¬
ed by mortal mind, that it is an illus¬
ion which can be overcome, like sick¬
ness and death. It was by his under¬
standing of the truths of Christian
Science that Christ remained sinless,
healed the sick, and that he “demon¬
strated” over death in the sepulcher
and rose on the third day. His sacri¬
fice had no more efficacy than that of
any other man who dies as a result of
his labors to bring a new truth into
the world, and we profit by his death
only as we realize the nothingness of
sickness, sin and death. “God’s
wrath, vented on his only son, is
without logic or humanity, aud but a
man-made belief.”
The Trinity, as commonly accept¬
ed, Mrs. Eddy denies, though she
seems to admit a kind of triune na¬
ture in God by saying over and over
again that he is “Love, Truth and
Life.”
The Holy Ghost she defines as
Christian Science: “This Comforter
I understand to be Divine Science.”
TENTS OF THE LOYAL EDDYITES.
Botli factions believed in the su¬
premacy of mind over matter, and in
the healing principle which Mrs. Ed¬
dy taught. But the loyal were those
who believed:
In the Fall in Lynn and its subse¬
quent revelation.
That the Bible and “Science and
Health” are one book—the Sacred
Scriptures.
That sin, disease, and death are
non-existent and will finally disap¬
pear under demonstration.
That Malicious Auimal Magnetism
Can cause sickness, sin and death.
That Mrs. Eddy has interpreted the
Motherhood, or feminine idea of God,
as Jesus Christ interpreted the mas¬
culine idea.
That the feminine idea of God is
essentially higher than the masculine.
MRS. EDDY AND THE HOLY FAMILY.
These comparisons did not stop with
the Virgin Mary and the star-crowned
woman. Throughout the first ten
years of the Journal there is a run¬
ning parallel between Mrs. Eddy and
Jesus Christ. This comparison was
continually heard from the pulpits of
Christian Science churches. The
Rev. George B. Day, “M.A., C.S.B.”
in a sermon delivered before the Chic¬
ago church and afterward approving¬
ly printed in the Journal, declared
that “Christian Science is the Gospel
according to Woman.” He went on
to say: “We are witnessing the
transfer of the gospel from male to
female trust. . .* . Eighteen hun¬
dred years ago Paul declared that
man was the head of the woman; but
now', in “Science and Health,” it is
asserted that “woman is the highest
form of man.”
Mr. Day called his sermon “Sheep,
Shepherd, and Shepherdess,” and he
considered, in turn, the disciples,
Christ, and Mrs. Eddy.
The Christian Scientist held that
Jesus, the man, was merely a man;
that “the Christ” w'hich dwelt within
him was Divine Mind, dwelling more
or less in all of us, but manifested in
a superlative degree in Jesus aud in
Mrs. Eddy.
EVE’S FRANKNESS REWARDED
It is because Eve was the first to
admit her fault in the garden of
Eden, Mrs. Eddy says, that a woman
was permitted to give birth to Jesus
Christ, and that a woman was per¬
mitted to write “Science and Health”
and to reveal the spiritual origin of
man.
MRS. EDDY’S VIEW'S ON MARRIAGE.
Among the many incidental ideas
which Mrs. Eddy has added to Quim
byism are her theory that the God¬
head is more femine masculine, and
her qualified disapproval of matri¬
mony. Quimby himself had a large
family and saw nothing unspiritual in
marriage. In defining the real pur¬
pose of marriage Mrs. Eddy says
nothing about children; “to happify
existence by constantintercourse with
those adapted to elevate it, is the
true purpose of marriage.” In her
chapter on marriage she says: “The
scientific morals of marriage is spirit¬
ual unity. . . . Proportionately as
human generation ceases, the un¬
broken links of eternal harmonious
being will be spiritually discerned.”
In her chapter called “Wedlock”
in Miscellaneous Writings (1897) Mrs.
Eddy, after a vagne and evasive dis¬
cussion of the subject, squarely puts
the question: “Is marriage nearer
right than celibacy? Human knowl
edge inculcates that it is, while Sci¬
ence indicates that it is not.” In
the same chapter she further says:
“Human nature has bestowed on a
wife the right to become a mother;
but if the wife esteems not this privi¬
lege, by mutual consent, exalted and
increased affections, she may win a
higher.”
Mrs. Eddy apparently believes that
Jesus Christ taught us to ignore fam¬
ily relations: “Jesus acknowledged
no ties of the flesh. He said: “Call
no man your father upon the earth;
for one is your father which is in
heaven.” Again he asked: ‘Who is
my mother, aud who are my brethren
but they who will do the will of my
father?’ We have no record of his
calling any man by the name of
father.”

L. R. ALMAND IS
PAINFULLY SHOT.
Mr. Reed Smith, Hotel Keeper at
Shady Dale Gets Angered
and Shoots Almand.
Mr. L. R. Almand who is w r ell
known to all the people of this city
and county was shot while on a busi¬
ness trip to Shady Dale last Friday,
the ball passing entirely through his
leg just below the knee, and inflict¬
ing a very painful wound. He was
brought to this city on the afternoon
train from that city and has been un¬
der the care of Dr. N. Z. Anderson.
At the time we go to press he is get¬
ting along very nicely and hopes to
be out in a few days.
Mr. Almand is a traveling salesman
for a buggy whip concern and went
to Snady Dale to call on the trade.
Dr. Rainey, who came up with him
Friday afternoon stated that the
trouble grew out of the fact that Mr.
Almand had engaged a team for the
afternoon from Mr. Smith, who runs
a livery stable in connection with the
hotel. When the team was sent
around the buggy was an open one
and Mr. Almand told Mr. Smith that
he had engaged a top buggy. Mr.
Smith became angered and told Mr.
Almand that he did not care whether
he got a team or not. Mr. Almand
then insisted on paying for his dinner
whereupon Mr. Smith became very
insulting in his remarks, and ran at
Almand with a knife. Mr. Almand
pushed him off with a chair and after
a few minutes went up to one of the
stores. It seems that Smith was not
satisfied and followed him up town,
sitting down in front of a store and
waiting till he could get a chance to
say something to him. Finally Mr.
Almand came to the front end of the
store and Mr. Smith, who had pro¬
cured a pistol in the mean time, drew
the gun and told Almand to defend
himself, firing instantly, with the
above stated results.
From what we could gather from
Dr. Rainey it seems that the fault
was all with Mr. Smith, and the
shooting was without provocation.
