SOLDIERS GIVEN PREFERENCE
IN RECONSTRUCTION WORK
Dr. W. B. Beauchamp, Director
General of Missionary Cente¬
nary, Says Methodist Church
Will Use Soldiers 111 Rebuild¬
ing Program.
“Our first duty is to give the return¬
ing soldier a ‘job,’ ” declared Dr. W.
B . Beauchamp, Director-General of the
Centenary Campaign of the M. E.
( hufeh, South, to a group of newspa
per representatives. “The boys com¬
ing back will not be nearly so thrilled
over flag-waving and shouts from the
sidewalk as they will be to feel the
trasp of a friendly hand and the
words, ‘We've got a job waiting for
you, old fellow!’ All over the country
men are using their best wits and en
ergies to find places for the boys who
were willing to face death when the
need came.
“The Methodist Church can do its
part in giving work to the boys who
are coming back, and we are going to
do that part to the best of our ability.
From May 18 to 25 we will conduct a
drive for $11 5, 000 ,000, of which our
own church, the M. E. Church, Houth,
will be responsible for |?>5,tOO,O0O. The
success of this campaign will mean
tie immediate erection of churches
and schools and the opening of ‘Jobs'
of all kinds.

BOLL WEEVIL SURVEY
IS MADE IN SUMTER
Records Are Being Taken On
Over 500 Farms.
The Georgia State College of Agri¬
culture, in co-operation with the U. &.<
Department of Agriculture in Wash¬
ington, is making a study of 560 farms
in Sumter County to determine what
effect the boll weevil has had in farm¬
ing in south Georgia. Records wrere
taken in this county five years ago,
and so the present survey will give
excellent information upon which to
base conclusions as to the changes in
farming which the boil weevil has
brought
From the records it will be deter¬
mined Just what size farms are pay¬
ing the largest profits and what pro¬
portion the different crops or enter
prizes show in determining this profit.
It might be guessed that the pig-pea¬
nut potato proposition has gone a long
way towards lessening the damage
done by Mr. Weevil.
During the last year the college has
also taken a small number of records
in Pike, .Mitchell and Walker coun¬
ties. The U. S. Department of Agri¬
culture has made a survey of Brooks
County as well as of Sumter. The
result* of the work in these two coun¬
ties may be *ecured by writing to the
