Taxes And Wages A Big Part
Of Telephone Expense
il ORE than half the entire cost of your telephone service Is
represented by the two expense items of taxes and wages.
During 1923 the wage and tax bill of the Southern BeU Com
pany amounted to approximately $9,566,000.
The taxes of all kinds paid In five States and to the federal govern
ment amounted to $1,451,000.

The wage bill amounted to $8,115,000, and was paid to 7,046 em
ployes throughout this section.
In Georgia the taxes of all kinds reached a total of $491,000.
In Georgia the wage bill of 2,705 employes amounted to more than
$2,820,000.
Taxes and wages represented more than 60 per cent of the oper
ating expenses of the Company last year.

Fort Valley's Peach Festival is an
institution, highly-fitting and worthy,
an event purely Georgian and a splend
id contribution to our own Georgia.
Quite a number of Covington and New
ton county i-itizens were in attendance
it thf poach festival and are unanmous
in their declaration that it was a peach
in the wy of entertainment.
Next year Covington and Newton
•ounty should be represented by one of
our prettiest girls on a float that will
