SOUTHERN
BITS OF

By Mrs. Henry Odum
In the number of answers re
ceived in the “Bits of Southern
Sunshine” Contest conducted by
The Covington News, two answers
were outstanding and as the eon
test manager could not decide be
tween them, he spoke to the edi
tor and he awarded them both
first prize, awarding six months
subscription of the Covington
News to Helen Darby, Social Cir
cle, Ga., Route 1, and six months
subscription to The Covington
News to Julian and Carolyn Moore
of Covington, Ga. The letters with
their solutions are reprinted be
low:
Social Circle, Ga.,
February 10, 1934.
Dear Sir:
Am sending a solution for Mrs.
Odum’s poetry. Hope you will
like it. I surely do enjoy The
Covington News.
Apples are yellow,
And apples are red;
But little Miss Mae
Just used her head.
The apples she ate,
But left the core;
Just one a day,
And then no more.
I do not think
That she disobeyed;
Just a wise old trick,
On her “Dad” she played.
Yours truly,
HELEN DARBY,
R. F. D.l, Social Circle, Ga.
Covington, Ga.,
February 16, 1934.
Covington News,
Covington, Ga.
Dear Sirs:
Enclosed find an answer to Mrs.
Odum’s poem, “The Apple Tree.”
. Trusting we may win the -six
months subscription to the News,
Very truly yours,
JULIAN AND CAROLYN MOORE,
Coviqgton, Ga. Ages 12 and 10.
MAY AND THE APPLES
May was a girl and one quite
bright,
Who always believed in doing the
right,
Father forbade her his apples to
pul!
Although the tree hung quite full.
Said May, “Those apples look so
good.
But not to pull them is under
stood.
I’ve heard it said an apple a day
Will make the doctor stay away
Now money is to hard to get
And to be saving I must not for
get.
To pull the apples would be sin
But to bite them wasn’t forbidden
by men.”
So the apples May did not pick,
Neither did she disobey nor get
sick.
Of course she wasn’t w'rong,
And Dad felt like singing a song.
To think he had a child so bright
And one who desired to do the
right.
The following poem was award
ed honorable mention by the
judges. ;
THE APPLE CORE
To this little May I read about,
I’ll say right at the start,
If she ate the apple and left the
core,
I think she’s “extra smart.
Once a man and twice a child,
The old saying rings,
I know her dad didn't punish her,
’Cause I expect he'd done the
very same thing.
To this little May, again I say,
She surely was a winner,
To do such a thing and own right
up.
Proves she wasn’t a sinner.
LITTLE LUCY SMITH,
Box 314, Porterdale, Ga.
It is said that the
never err, but who wants to al
ways be right?
PINPOINT
SERMONS
By REV. J. O. BURNETTE
The indifference in the
churches is to be accounted for
partly by the differences in the
churches.
The only sermon the devil
really fears is the one living on
two legs.
Devotion to duty is a fire that
warms us but worldly ambition is
a fire that consumes us.
The best place to criticise your
neighbor is in front of your own
mirror.
Some folks carry a chip on their
shoulder and often they use it to
start a fire with.
Some church members are aw
fully slow about everything they
do—except getting tired.
Too much religion will destroy
a man's talents as a gambler. %
