We have followed the high
lights in the life of Jesus as re
corded by Matthew from his birth
and childhood on into the second
year and to the ipiddle of his min
istry. We may summarize the
lessons and combine them into a
picture of him as “he went about
doing good,” illustrating “the
meaning of Christian discipleship.”
Birth and Infancy of Jesus
A new star was ushered iu the
birth of Jesus that drew wise men
from the East to worship him, and
still wise men a re going to Bethle
hem to bow before him.
They brought their most pre
cious gifts and men of wisdom
have ever done this, and we should
lay our treasures at the feet of
this Child.
From Egypt the Child was car
ried to Nazareth where he passed
nearly thirty years in his child
hood and young manhood growing
in wisdom and in favor with God
and man.
Baptism ami Temptation of Jesus
Jesus entered his ministry
through the ordinance of baptism
and the ordeal of temptation. The
one was a proper sign of admis
sion into the kingdom of God, a
badge of loyalty, a flag to follow.
From baptism he was quickly
hurried into temptation, stepping
immediately out of fellowship
with the Father into a desperate
struggle with the devil. Tempta
tion borders and penetrates all our
life and there is no escaping it. It
is the price we must pay for our
free agency and moral responsibil
ity.
The devil has invented no new
temptations, and the old Bible still
contains an armory of weapons
with which we can repulse every
fiery dart of evil.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
Jesus opened his ministry with
the pregnant word and command,

Repent! The word means to
j change the mind need and this do and is some- can
thing we all to
do.
Our minds are wrong in their
ideas and attitudes towards God
and sin and the world, and we
need to change and reverse them
into attitudes of repentance and;
faith.
However bad and discouraging
the world in which he worked,
Jesus had a message that matched
all its needs and power to cure all
its troubles.
Standards of the Kingdom
Jesus gave the constitution of
the kingdom in the Sermon on
the Mount.
Blessing is pronounced upon the
poor in spirit, for their spirit of
humility frees them from outer
fretting and gives them an inner
kingdom of peace, They that
mourn are comforted, and the
j meek shall inherit the earth be
cause their meekness is spiritual
might tnat wins the real victories
of the world. They that hunger
and thirst after righteousness shall
be filled, for there is enough of
spiritual goods to go around and
fill every cup.
Putting God’s Kingdom First
We have further teaching about
the kingdom, for it has many sides
and aspects and activities. Prayer
is its vital breath.
We must pray as a child must
speak to its father, yet there are
dangers in prayer. Our prayers
may wear down into
phrases and mechanical forms that
are mere ruts in which they run
with little meaning,
The Lord of prayer himself gave
the prayer of the Lord which has
ever remained as our model.
Our real treasures are spiritual
and not material, and we should
see the kingdom first because it
is the sum of all blessings.
Warnings ami Promises
The mountain sermon gathers
up all its precepts and compacts
them into one splendid principle,
the Golden Rule.
Good trees are important in our
orchards and forests, and even
more Important are they in the
garden and fields of our lives. We
can get a good tree only by getting
a good root, and we are to prove
„n things k,. b> the truits they 1 bear. ___
Even more important is that
we build our lives on sure founda
tions, and there is only one Rock
of Ages that will forever stand
through al storms and floods.
Jesus’ Power to Help
The nature of the work of Jesus
is visibly and vividly illustrated
in the case of the helpless para
lytic. His helplessness throws a
flashlight on lite condition of the
sinner, and the assistance of the
four friends who took him on a
bed to the Saviour shows how we
must all help one another in the
world, and this mutual help ex
tends to salvation and al! the work
of the kingdom.
At the point where human help
reached its limit divine help in

The Twelve Sent Forth
The work of Jesus was growing
and it was necessary to organize
it on a wide*- and more permanent
basis. The twelve disciples were
chosen and we scrutinize their
names with interest.
Their message was the greatest
that could be given to this world,
the kingdom of heaven. Kingdoms
on earth have had their chance to
show what they can do, and the
wor j,j sa dly needs something that
can do better, and it has this in
the kingdom of heaven,
Jesus’ Testimony Concerning
Himself
He did not blame John for his
doubt, nor answer his question
dogmatically, but sent him more
facts and told him to work out the
answer for himself.
Parables of the Kingdom
There is a string of seven para
bles in the thirteenth chapter of
matthew and they are so many
jewels in truth, each one flashing
its own color and beauty.
The mustard seed illustrates a
small beginning that has a large
ending. So the gospel starts as a
minute seed of truth and yet in
time it may change the life of a
continent.
The leaven illustrates the in
ward work of the truth as it
quietly grows in the mind and
heart and spreads its vital eon
tagion from heart to heart, The
hid treasure shows that the king
dom must be sought as diamonds
and gold must be searched out
from the deep rocks in which they
are hid. The pearl of great price
shows how compact and portable
is the treasure of the kingdom,
and the dragnet shows that good
and bad are drawn in by the gos
pel net of preaching and these
must be separated as they are in
some degree in this world and will
finally be in the eternal world.

Jesus in his ministry stepped out

COORDINATOR URGES REGULATION
OF MOTOR CARRIER INDUSTRY
CENTRAL
GEORGIA
After 8 months of study of the transportation
situation the Federal Coordinator has issued a report
recommending Federal regulation of the motor carrier
industry and the water carrier industry. In transmit
ting this report the Chairman of the Interstate Com
merce Commission said that in the judgment of the
Commission the enactment of regulation for motor
carriers and water carriers “is imperatively necessary
under present conditions.”
The Federal Coordinator reached the following
conclusions:
“That both the water lines and the motor trucks
and busses should be brought under a greater degree of
regulation; that the aim should be to obtain a well-knit
national transportation system with each form of
transportation playing its appropriate part, with the
minimum waste and duplication; and that to achieve
this end Federal regulation should be coordinated in
the hands of the Interstate Commerce Commission;
that a system of stable rates should be provided which
w r ill reflect the lowest costs of good service, but afford
the necessary foundation for credit.”
The report points out that N.R.A. codes for motor
carriers are regulatory “on a temporary emergency
basis, are largely industial self-regulation and not well
adapted for use where serious conflicts of interest be
tween the industry, other industries and the general
public are involved; nor are they adapted to the proper
coordination of all forms of transportation.”
These conclusions from an impartial source, fol
lowing an exhaustive investigation, should receive the
thoughtful attention of the public.
Constructive criticism and suggestions are invited.
