I TRIP To The HOLY LANDf
? By RE V. E. M. WISE, Pastor Porterdale Methodist Church t
March 18.h wae Sunday, and a
glorious spring day it was. And
this was to be a full^and happy
day for our party. After break
fast, true to our Sunday habits,
we made our preparations to at
tend Sunday School. Near the
Y. M. C. A. building is a little
Protestant mission conducted by
some woman from America. My
traveling companions bore a letter
of introduction to these mission
aries, and so we decided we would
attend Sunday School at their
chapel.
We arrived in good time, and
were cordially welcomed. A rather
modest size congregation assembl
ed, and the se sion began. We
were especially interested in the
superintendent, who was a native
Arab, who as he told us had been
converted from Catholism, He was
a young man of some gifts and
graces, and conducted the services
in the Arab languag^ in wha't
seemed to us an efficient manner.
In the singing, familiar tunes were
used, but very strange words. We

lustily in the English langauge,
j while in the rest of the congregation
sang the Arab tongue, The
resulting harmony was no dbpleas
ing to us, but I am not sure how
it sounded to tihe others.
After songs, prayer and scrip
ture reading—all in the Arab
language—.we were ready to as
semble to our classes. We would
normally have gone into the adult
group, but it would have been
“all Greek” or rather Arab to us,
which was just as bad. But we
were not neglected, One of the
missionaries invited us to go into
her class of adolescent girls, ex
plaining that her girls all under
stood the English language, and
that she would teach the class in
our tongue, I am very glad that
this concession was made, because
it was really a revelation to us
to see how well versed those girls
were in scripture, and how readily
they responded to the questions
which the teacher asked, I must
confess that I felt humilated to

By way of parenthesis I wish
to make an Observation right here
with reference to a fact which is
rather trying on the pride of Mr.
Average American citizen when
he travels abroad. Thh fact is
that he is so ignorant that he has
no knowledge whatever of any
language save his own. In Euro
pean and Asiatic countries nearly
everybody knows and can speak
at ’east two or three different
guages. This applies even to
the children. How ignorant I
felt when I listened to little boys
and girls switch from one ian
guage to another, while I could
speak only the English and that
not any too well! Of course there
is a reason for this. In
we have no need for any save our
native language, but in other parts
of the world, where nations are
smaller and races are intermingl
ed, one is constantly coming into
contact with people of other
tongues, and he needs several ian-

I used o think the great majority
of the people of he world spoke
English, and that it was rapidly
becoming the universal language.
On this tr^p, however, I
thoroughly disillusioned,
Bu back to our Sunday pro
gram. As soon as the Sunday
Sdhool ession was over I left bro
ther and Mrs. Bryant and set out
alone to find the American church
which I had previously located on
the map, in another part oi the
city, on he day before we had
seen a notice in one of the little
Jerusalem dailies that tih-e Rev.
Bud Robinson of America would
preach at the American church at
the morning hour on the
ing day. I wae de ermined to
fear him, because by this time I
was getting truly hungry to
a real spiritual sermon in plain
English. I ibad heard Uncle Bud
before, and I knew he would noi
| disappoint me.
Finally I arrived at the place I
j was : eeking, and was somewhat
: disappointed not to find the house
packed with people eager to hear
the celebrated Bud Robinson. But
then I remember that Uncie Bud
was not as well known in Rales
tine as he is in America. I ar-
lived ahead of ime and found a
1 si rvice in progress, being conduct
ed in some language foreign tome,
Upon inquiry I learneu that the
English service was to follow, and
llii relieved die misgivings I had
jhad in when I did not see anybody
;he congregation who looked
like Bud Robinson. Presently the
service in the native language
came to a close, and there was an
inteilude during which a group
of five or six men entered, I
instantly recognized one of hese
as the American evangelist. I
spoke to him and told him who I
was. Uncle Bud seemed as glad
to see me as if I had been a
los. brother. I wae introduced to
the other members of the parry,
j and enjoyed talking wish them an
til he time arrived for the service
j to begin.
After a preliminary service of
song, prayer and scripture read
ing, Uncle Bud preached. He
took as ihis subject “Why I

quoted a large number of passages

after me.
The af ernoov service proved to
be even more interesting than
the morning service had been, for
at this time Uncle Bud preached
through an interpreter who relay
ed the message to the congrega
tion in the Armenian language,
As the pastor read he scripture

Bud got happy, and shouted, ‘‘I
don’t know what you are reading,
but bless God anyway. I know
it is good.” Here again we had
the opportunity of hearing and
participating in dual singing. The

preacher preached with such for
vor that at points in the discourse
the interpreter found himself a
loss to know how to interpret,
but that the message in the main
went over was attested by the
fact that at the conclusion of the
a large number of people
went forward and knelt at the

which was given through the in

At the close of the altar service
I hesitatingly app.Vached Uncie
Bud with the request that he al
low me to make his picture, In
his morning sermon he had made
the s atement that he had never
seen a picture show in his life, d rd
that he was a moving picture show

ask for tihe privilege of making
the picture, knowing as I did his
antipathy to motion pictures in
general. But he was very cordial
and obliging, and made no objec

might make his picture, The ro
suit was one of the most natural
likenesses I have ever seen, The
expression on his face and the
movement of his lips are perfect.
Thus he did become a moving pic

MEDITATION
We think we know and I know yet
We know not wisdoms alphabet
Just what we do and what we are
Is different as moon and star.
Why should we doubt, muse and
"complain
When we have sun and yet want
rain
I hope to know and will some day
Why it is so easy to lose our way.
I will not fret nor worry so
For there are slme things that I
know
11 am sure there is a sky above
Sweet little children, and mother
love.
And rowdy robbing in new vests
Are strutting love and building
nests.
And all along the picket fence
Are fragrant gay dressed hyacinths
I do not doubt a God above
A resurrection day nor love.
