T lSUNJ OMORROW I
BY J. C. WILSON
Newspaper Features, Inc.
Though it passed unnoticed by
the daily press, in his most recent
fireside talk over the radio to the
people of the United States Presi
dent Roosevelt definitely an
nounced his determination to re
turn to Georgia, his other home,
for the Thanksgiving holiday. It
will be another great occasion for
Georgians. *■
According to plans already
mg made, though, of course, they
’ll depend on the convenience of
the president, Ed Dunlap, of
Gainesville, a native Georgia of
old and distinguished background
served with Conspicuous bravery
m the World War, will go to Wash
ington to accompany the president
to Georgia.
The Gainesville people are hop
ing that the president will take
time out on his Georgia trip to
visit their town where a monu
ment to President Roosevelt will
be unveiled the day after Thanks
giving to show the appreciation of
the citizens of Hall county for the
encouragement and aid given
Gainesville after the destructive
tornado of a couple of years ago.
Edgar Dunlap will have charge
of the day’s celebration in Gaines
ville when Georgia’s Senior Sen
ator, Walter F. George, will be a
distinguished speaker of the occa
sion.
This Ed Dunlap is a man to
keep your eye on in Georgia.
There are those who say he will be
in the race for Governor and you
may be sure the State could go
farther and fare much worse. Ed
Dunlap is a prominent leader in
the American Legion. He is a

J is a man who never trims and

! it was Ed Dunlap, President
! Roosevelts warm friend and per
sonal representative in Georgia
| who organized the tremendous re
(option ior the president when he
eame to Georgia in 1935. Of
course, the President has not de
l finitely accepted the Gainesville
invitation, but if there is a man
in Georgia who can pursuade him
to do it that man is Ed Dunlap
Mr. Dunlap has not been a
seeker after political preferment.
He has never held elective public
office. He was the first man to
be called in Georgia by the
President for responsible duty,
but if his friends succeeded in
drafting him into the race for
governor he will enter the
cal ties or burdened with hench
men who have contributed to a
political career.
Assembly Rumblings !
When the special session of the
General Assembly gets under way S
Thanksgiving day, from what we
hear, there’s going to be a tax
program that will knock your eye
out. They do say that Governor
Rivers sees the need for another
four and a half million dollars in
taxes. Then there is that trou
blesome ad valorem tax with a |
five mills minimum to be fixed |
each year by the Governor. Since j
Governor Talmadge pared it to I
four mills and then to three,
thereby saving the Georgia tax
payers a million dollars at each
paring, it isn’t any political pic-1
me to come along and hike it
back to five mills. I
be Just it is what hard the taxing program j j
to say, but it pro
bably will include a bill to abo-1
lish the ad valorem tax. Some j
other tax would be substituted for |
it. Rumor has it that the public
utilities which already are hard i
hit by taxes, are in for a tax hike, j
It may be that a bill will be in- [
| duced to put a state tax on Coca
Cola.
But speculations are that these
two bills are just to be introduc
ed to force these interests to sup
port crative the five far more sinister and lu- j

tax that is certain to be' introduc- I
ed
a five per cent sales tax would
produce $20,000,000 revenue a j
y ear j n Georgia. It would be
revenue from the buyer of small
things—the poor man. Governor
Rivers always has been a sales taxi
man and don’t think he isn’t one
still
Then there’s the administration
plan to take county road building
out of the hands of the county
officials of Georgia and put it into
the hands of the Highway De
partment. Practically every be
liever in county rights in Geor
gia will fight that and rightly , we
need no such centralized state
government.
