DAVID D. SHERMER
We, at Covington Mills, are
deeply touched by the passing
of Mr. Dayton D. Shermer,
father of Mrs. J. I. Alford.
We have so learned to love
Mr. and Mrs. Alford that we
feel that their sorrow is ouis.
However, we did not know Mr.
Shermer in person, we feel that
he must have been a truly
fine man to have been the fath
er of such a fine and religious
person as Mrs. Alford.
We hope that this humble
expression of sympathy will in
some way lighten the burden
upon their hearts.
TOM KINNEST.

.ABOUT TOWN
Evelyn Day and John Lackey
were teamed in the play, “See you
later,” and it seems that the two
are carrying on better off stage
at the art (?) Of love making
than they did behind the foot
lights . . . John's brother, Harvey,
met his wife in a play on the very
same stage some years ago . . .
Miss Come Ham, who directed
the play, made many friends dur
ing her short stay here . . . There
is talk that the characters who
worked with her here are going to
see her present the play again
Tuesday nite somewhere below
Atlanta . . . Did the Sara Harris
Samuel Cox romance end with the
finishing of the play ? . . . The
John Brown-Ruby W’hite romance
blossomed out anew during the
practice of “See you later!” . . .
“Speedy” came through with his
part okay . . . The baby contest
was a success . . . Beverly Mer
ritt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Merritt, won the trophy as
the most popular baby at Coving

... It seems that the boys got a
little too rough around the vil
lage Hallowe’en nite . . . Every
bridge on the village was moved
or torn up . . . Glasses were brok
en out of the school house win
dows , . . The above mentioned j
' bad but
are manners can be put
, down as minor acts when compar
e d with the one that had to do
with the wetting of Sam Williams’
house ... A water hose was put
to his front tdoor while his family
was away and water was forced
through underneath and left run
ning until The Sam returned from j
town . . . damage was heavy j
on the rug as well as it caused
the varnish on some of the furni
ture to crack . . . This action is
deplored by the mill management
as well as most everyone else of
the village . . . The guilty parties |
should be punished ... It is al- i
right to have a little fun but j
when you start shooting water
into someone’s house and wetting
things that they have paid for it
is no longer termed as fun ... It ,
is downright meanness . . . The
ones found guilty of breaking the
window glasses in the school
house should be made to pay for
them . . . We are glad that Mr.
Boots White has recovered of his
illness and is back on the
job . . . Guess it won’t be long be
he will be eating fish again.
WHAT 1 LIVE FOR
I live for those who love me,
For those 1 know are true ’
For 1116 heaven that smiles above
me.
And awaits my spirit, too;
For the human ties that bind me,
For the tasks by God assigned
me,
And the good that I can do.
I live to learn their story,
VVho’ve suffered for my sake,
To emulate their glory,
And follow in their wake;
Bards, martyrs, patriots, sages,
The noble of all ages,
Whose deeds crown history’s
pages,
And time’s great volume make.
I live to hail the season,
By gifted minds foretold,
When men shall rule by reason,
And not alone by gold—
When man to man united,
And every wrong thing righted,
The whole world shall be lighted,
As Eden was of old.
1 live to hold communion with ail
that is divine,
To feel there is a union
’Twixt nature’s heart and mine
To profit by affliction,
Reap truths from fields of fiction,
Grow wiser from conviction,
And fulfill each grand design.
I live for those who love me,
For those who know me true,
For the heaven that smiles above
me,
And awaits my spirit, too;
For the wrong that needs resist
ance,
For the cause that lacks assist
ance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that 1 can do.
