In Rockdale
More than lti million pounds of
food product* were purchased in
Georgia and removed from over
burdened markets during 1937 by
the Federal Surplus Commodities
Corporation, in cooperation with
Agricultural Adjustment Administra
tion. The primary object of these
surplus-removal programs is to stabi- i
i»e markets and protect returns to
growers. Purchases by the Corpora
tion in Georgia last year included
1,441.800 pounds of cottonseed oil,
which was converted into shorten
ing; 108,000 dozen eggs; 18,622 gal*
Ions of cane syrup, and 13,545 water*
melons. In addition, the Corporation
purchased 50,000 pounds of surplus
frozen fish under a special act of
Congress providing for the purchase
and distribution of a surplus of that
commodity. The Corporation also
supervised the manufacture of raw
cotton into 127,197 yards of cotton
fabric in Gerogia, the bulk of which
was used in experimental programs
conducted to find new uses for cot
ton.

With woodland fires scorching the
countryside at this season of the
year, the 116 cooperating farmers
in the erosion control demonstration
area near Rome report that less
than 1 percent of the woodland on
their farms has burned over this
season. Before they adopted fire pre

practices to save and improve their
farms, W. H. Howell, project man

Many Improvements Made
In the Past Several

A special committee and the Board
of Stewarts held a meeting at the
Conyers First Methodist Church
Tuesday evening to discuss plans of
remodelnig the Church. Full details
of the decision and plans of this
committee could not be learned be

The recent growing fever in Con

during the past several months and
now improvements are being made
at such a rapid rate that an average
observer has difficulty in keeping up
“with things."
One of the most recent planned
improvements was the deal between
Lewis Kent, efficient proprietor of
Kents Cafe and Arnold Whitaker
which was closed several days ago.
Mr Kent Purchased the store butld
ing that he and the Rockdale Bar
ber Shop now occupies. The Rock
dale Barber Shop will move into
new quarters during the next sev
eral weeks and the Kents Cafe will
expand into these quarters, keeping
the present set up tn one cafe a'
it is now. General improvements will
be made and tables will be placed
in the new section. These impro"-’
