I Fortunately the sharp pink and
orange shades are out. We have
plenty of the purplish pink and
orange red polish shades, but they
are subdued and have brownish
undertones that make them key
perfectly with either fair or sun
tanned skin tones.
In the smoky polish shades your
choice of color is determined by
your frock. You must choose a
soft, purplish shade of nai] polish.
if you wear the new dusty pink or
bright pink shades in your cos

ange reds, however, either for
contrast with turquoise, pale blue
and green or for harmony with a
golden yellow, rusty pink, burnt
orange, red or brown outfit. *
Vivid red nail polish is still

your frock. If
you wish to be
daring, you
can choose a
bold contrast
ing shade of
polish as long
as it doesn't
actually clash
with your com
plexion or your
costume.
This happens
to be a season
ish has been used by movie stars
for some time, but this summer
for the first time, it is being seen
on smart hands everywhere.
Polish foundations are attract
ing more attention than formerly
The first thick, waxy preparations
were not successful—they took too
long to dry and sometimes changed
the polish shade. Now leading
manufacturers have improved
their polish bases. The newest is
colorless, so the shade of the fin
ishing polish coat isn’t affected at
all. It dries as quickly as polish
and is exceptionally smooth in
texture.
A polish base will make your
nail polish last longer and will give
it a smoother surface. This is be
cause few nail surfaces are entire
ly even. The foundation fills in
tiny ridges and uneven areas, SO
the polish flows on far more
smoothly and clings more closely
The foundation polish, applied
over the nail edge, helps to ore
vent slipping.
Even though you like tinted lac
quers for finishing your nails and
brightening your costumes, do give
your fingernails a rest occasion
ally. In spite of the improvement
in polishes and polish removers
you will find your nails becoming
drier and more temperamental if
you use them constantly.
When you are home week-ends,
for instance, give yourself a com
plete manicure, omitting the pol
ish. Then soak vour fingertips in
warm olive oil for five minutes, or
massage each fingertip with warm
cuticle oil or cuticle cream. Mas
sage your hands with a rich cream
and put on a pair of beauty gloves.
Wear them overnight if they do
not • bother vou. otherwise keep
them on for fifteen minutes or so
while vou read or listen to the
radio.
Leave your fingertips free of
polish for a couple of days each
week and see how much your nails
have improved at the end of the
month.
