Jt has been several days since the Joe Louis-Max
Schme]infr fight. Probably so many that it really shouldn’t
he mentioned here and no doubt it wouldn’t had I been
“ e 0 f those to crawl out on a limb with Schmeling. This
ner however, picked Louis to win by a knockout and
can see no reason whatsoever in keeping it a secret.
Louis won in a walk, you might say. And the so
called fight experts are already picking him to do
likewise when he meets Max Baer in September.
Max Baer will be a different fighter when he meets
Louis this tiime. He will be a down-and-outer on the come
back trail. A fighter that could still be champion of the
world had he kept himself fit. A fighter that has the hard
est light hand wallop in the game. And one that can get
just as mean as the next one when he really wants to. Max
might not beat Louis but he certainly will put up a better
fight than Schmeling did. Even better than he himself
did before.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
You might have to drink another glass of ice water
and get a little closer to the fan to read this. It just hap
pens that quite a few people are talking it about town and
copy is a bit short just now.
Will Covington High school have a football team this
fall? This is a question that is heard often these warm |
days. 'Most everyone is wanting a football squad to repre
sent Covington High. They point out that due to the fact
the gymnasium is almost fallen down the local school
should go in for more outdoor sports. And what outdoor
sport is any more thrilling that football?
It understood that equipment . for , football , . n
is new
was bought last year. With this already on hand it
should be no trouble to get football started off this
season. Already there is plenty of material around
this section of the county. It will be easy to get these
big boys in school once they find that a chance to
play football will be had.
After all, why not play football?
There are very few serious accidents in football now.
The boys have learned to take care of themselves. Too,
they are equipped better than the lads of several years
ago. The officials are up on their game better, too. There
are not as many fouls. Football is cleaner. It is a game that
teaches something along the line of the tougher side of
life. The boys learn team work—something that certainly
plays a great part in their future living.
Let’s have a football team, Covington High!

Callaway, Cohen
Close Race Is Forecast for
Championship Honor
In Last Half.
By Clyde Castleberry
Cohen’s team engaged in a pitch
er’s battle with Covington Mill in one
of the hottest games softball has
seen this season. The two pitchers
holding the spotlight were Mann
and Watkins. The Covington Mill
hurler was in rare form - holding the
hard-hitting Cohen team to four
hits and one run. Mann gave up
two runs and seven hits.
Although out-hit 15-8, Cohen
bunched their singles, which enabled
them to defeat Callaway, first half
winners. 10-8 m a slug feast.
Cohen outplayed castieberry
Rainey to win, 8-6. Neither team
was in good form. Cohen scored
eight runs on six hits while the
losers got six runs on seven safeties.
Callaway’s team was treated to a
banquet by Mr. Tom Callaway, Sr.,
and they returned their compliment
the next day by defeating Castle
berry-Rainey, 5-4. Faulkner bested
Johnson in a pitchers duel.
The King-Hicks boys have taken
over the league lead by defeating
City Pharmacy and Castleberry
Rainey. The effective pitching of
Doc Vining overshadowed that of
his rival, Guy Robinson, giving
King-Hicks a 9-6 win.
Vining started the game and was
later releived by J. P. Butler. Doc

City Rallies to Win First
Game, 4-2; Loses in
Night Cap, 7-4.
The All-Star softball game be
tween a picked team of the city and
Covington Mills played at Trojan
park last Sunday afternoon, didnt
settle much. The clubs played a
double header and split. The city
team won the first game, 4-2 and
the Millers took the night cap, 7-4,
The city team staged a ninth in
ning rally to score all of their four
runs with a double and two singles
coupled with a base on balls and
two Covington Mill errors.
Covington Mills got away to a
two run lead in the first inning very
much in the same manner in which
the city club scored their runs. A
double, two singles, a base on balls
and an error accounted for the two
markers.
Both Johnson and Butler hurled
great ball. Seven hits were marked
against both pitchers. 'Johnson was
on the hillock for the winners and
Butler fired away for the lasers.
Castle was best batter for the city
team with two for four. Sammom
led the hitting for the losers with
two for three. Baker got two for
four.
In the second game Claude Yar
brough and Pug McElroy tied for
hitting honors with two singles for
three times each.
Billy Faulkner hit a home run in
the fourth inning with two men on.
It got over the center fielders head.
