“You bet your boots there’s plenty of fox in Newton
county!” Jay “Happy’’ Darby was doing; the talking.
Mr. Darby resides some four miles down the Jackson
highway. He has been hunting fox in these parts for over
four years and he thinks it the greatest sport in the world.
“There is nothing sweeter than sitting around a
good log fire on top of a high hill with several of your
busting friends listening to the dogs shase a fox,”
began Jay.
“How do you locate a fox hunting district?" we asked.
Jay Darby smiled, “Well, most of the time people will
tell you about something eating their chickens. We look
for tracks and, well ... we find them.”
Jay thinks the old “Gaither place” is the best dis
trict in which to go fox hunting. “We have had the
best luck there,” he said.
Dr. Tribble, Tom Swann, Carl Reed and Jay Darby
usually go fox bunting together. They make quite a four
some, do these lovers of fox-hunting.
Tom Swann marvels at the smartness of a fox.
“It is a great sport,” he said, “to sit around the fire
high on a hill top and listen to the dogs and grasp the
cunningness of the fox in giving them the slip.”
“It isn’t hard to tell the ‘dead end’ bark of the dogs.
And it gives one an effortless feeling, too,” continued Mr.
Swann.
“Why,” began Mr. Swann, with a start, “there is
a story going the round about a fox out-smarting
fleas.”
“Did he belong to flea circus something? 9 >> we

The old fox-hunter laughed. “Well, not
You see there happened to be a fellow watching a fox
near a creek one day. The fox got himself a long stick,
holding it, between his teeth. The fox backed up to the
creek, putting the tip of his tail in the water. Slowly he
eased his body into the water until only the tip of his nose
and the stick could be seen above the water. Suddenly he

walked out of the creek, shook himself and went about
enjoying a life without fleas.”
The water had forced the fleas to' hop upon the
stick!

Mr. Swann and the boys are planning an of this
hunt in the near future and it is the intention re
porter to go along just to see how the fox-hunters tare.
A fox hunt should be “meat” around for Tommy the fire Calla-^ and

tell jokes and listen to the dogs bark!
Doc Vining is another guy that would make a good
fox hunter. The only trouble might be that the other
hunters would be laughing so over his jokes that the barks
of the dogs would be drowned.
