Miss Margaret Faulkner, Popular February
Bride ■ Elect I’cterl With a Linen Shower
Many lovely and useful gifts were
presented Miss Margaret Faulkner,
bride-elect at the party Thursday
afternoon at which Mrs. Joe Heard
and Mrs. Everett Pratt were hos
tesses at the home of their mother,
Mrs. J. L. Elliott, who also assisted
in entertaining.
Spring flowers were used in the
decorations throughout the home.
A main feature of the decorations
was the miniature bridal scene ar
ranged on a table In the hall, using
small dolls, dressed to represent the
bride and groom and attendants,
who were grouped around an im
provised altar. Bridal contests were
featured during the afternoon.
Invited were Miss Faulkner, Miss
Pauline Faulkner. Mrs. W. C. Faulk
ner. Mrs. Floyd Everitt, Mrs. A. C.
Mr. Roy Bowden, Noted Horticulturist
To Speak at March Garden Club Meet
The Covington Garden Club will
hold its regular meeting on Wednes
day afternoon. March 1th at the
Public Library at '3:30 P. M., at
which time the Home Demonstra
tion Clubs of the county will be en
tertained.
The meeting will be in the form
of a plant exchange The Garden
Club ladies bringing shrubs to ex
change with the Home Demonstra
tion Club women for native trees,
shrubs, flowers, etc.
The speaker of the afternoon will
be Mr. Roy Bowden, manager,
greenhouses and nurseries, of the
University of Georgia, Mr. Bow
den is the author of the Calender,
Weiner Roasts Given in Compliment

Miss Margaret Faulkner, and her
fiance. Mr. Herbert Vining, whose
marriage will take place this
month have been the inspiration
for many interesting parties, among
which was the weiner roast Friday
evening, given by Mrs. Claude Jor
dan and Mrs. Phillip Smaha, at the
home of the former on Davis St.
The affair took place on the lawn
on the hostess which was illuminat
ed with multi-colored lights. Fol
lowing the weiner roast dancing was

bridge clubs.
On both occasions the reception

flowers In pastel shades. On Thurs
day Mrs. W. C. MeGahee was pre
sented high score prize and on Fri
day Mrs. Jim Cook won top score
award.

On Thursday afternoon Mrs. John
Bob Weaver delightfully entertained
members of her club and several in
vited guests at a bridge party, given
at her home on Church Street.

Confederacy Meet With Mrs. 0. C. Harper
On Tuesday afternoon, February
21st, Mrs. O. C. Harper was hostess
to the Covington Chapter of the
United Daughters of the Confeder
acy at her home on Conyers Street.
Co-hostesses with Mrs. Harper were
Mrs. N. S. Turner, Jr.. Mrs. R. E.
Everitt, Mrs R. W. Stilwell and
Mrs. J. T, Pitts.
The meeting was called to order
by the president, Mrs. C. B. Childs,
and opened with prayer by the
Chaplain, Mrs. Walker Combs, fol
lowed by the pledge to the United
States flag and the salute to the
Confederate flag, led by Miss Sallie
Mat Sockwell.
The minutes were read by the re
cording secretary, Mrs. J. E. Hutch
ins and the treasurer's report was
given by Miss Jule Allen, treasurer.
Mrs. Hutchins, corresponding sec
retary, pro tern, read notes received
in return for invitations sent out.
It was very gratifying to the chap
ter to hear the note from James
Reid Jones, commander of the
Georgia Division, United Confeder
ate Veterans, accepting the invita
tion to hold the 1939 reunion in Oc
tober in Covington.
Mr . A. Belmont Dennis, as 3rd
vice-president, told of the flag sale
sponsored by the C. of C. and of a
Valentine heart carried to the vet
erans at the Soldiers' Home by the
Children. Mrs. Dennis also made an
appeal for more donations to the
Mrs. Norman V. Randolph educa
tional fund.
Old Fashioned Characters Featured at
Meeting of the Covington Music Club
Characters of the 1860's stepping
through an old fashioned heart and
singing old ballads featured the
Valentine program given at the
February meeting of the Covington
Music Club, which was held Tues
day evening at the home of Mrs. E.
B. Rogers.
The entrance to the music room
was transformed into an old fash
ioned Valentine, being outlined with
white lace paper and having a back
drop of black velvtt. served as the
setting for those taking part on the
program, who were dressed in cos
tumes of the 1860's, the ladies in
hoop skirts and frills and the men
in top hats and capes, representing
an old fashioned portrait, and when

Society Meet at Home of Mrs. Wiliams
The general meeting of the Pqr
terdal' Baptist W. M. U. held its
regular monthly meeting at the
home of Mrs. J. B. Williams last
Tuesday evening with the president,
Mrs. J. B. Williams, presiding.
The meeting was opened by sing
ing “I Love to Tell the Story.”
Prayer by Mrs. Williams. New mem
bers and visitors were welcomed. All
reports given show all organizations
doing splendid work.

Miss Mary 'Lizzie Wright, editor of
the Georgia Division and to Mrs.
Iva Farmer, chairman of publicity
of the Georgia Division.
Mrs. L. D. Bolton, in the absence
of Mrs. Ola Malone, historian, an
nounced that literature had been
sent to the schools in the county in
preparation for the annual essay
contest for school children on the
life of Thomas Johnathan (Stone
wall) Jackson.
The program given below was an
nounced by the program chairman,
Mrs. A. C. Harper, and was enjoyed
by the chapter after the business
session:

"Georgia Emblems,” by Miss Mary
Frances Henderson.
“Noted Georgia Authors,” by Miss
Carolyn Moore.
Mrs. W. R. Stilwell gave a paper
on “Louisiana and New Orleans.”

"Points of Historic Interest in New
Orleans.”
At the conclusion of the meeting

Church Held February Meeting Monday
Th Woman's Auxiliary met in
the Presbyterian church parlors
Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock,
with 27 members and 6 visitors
present. A profusion of spring
flowers and shrubs, together with i
“George Washington” decorations,
artistically arranged by Miss. Ella
McClendon, formed a lovely set
ting for the occasion.
Mrs. L. A. Patrick, program lead
er, was called to the bedside of her
sister in Athens, and in her absence,
Mrs. J. S. Gardner, president, ,
presided in her usual manner with
charm and poise. Opening song j
was “Blest Be The Tie,” followed
with prayer by Dr. Gates, remem- j
bering especially those who are ill.
Mrs. Billy Berry conducted the j
devotional, based on the 8th and 1
100th Psalms, closing with prayer
and song. "Others.”
Mrs. Boswell, president of At
lanta Presbyterial, was introduced
by Mrs. Gardner, and spoke out of
the abundance of her heart, stressed
the Minister’s Annunity Fund, stat
ing that $2,200,000 has already been
raised and only $800,000 more was
needed. She invited our women to
attend the Post Madras conference
at St. Marks’ Methodist church, in
Atlanta, Friday, February 24th. Also
an Auxiliary Training School the
week of April 24th.
Mrs. Leonard, foreign mission
secretary, and Mrs. Shelverton,
home mission secretary of the At
lanta Presbyterial, spoke most con
cisely and intelligently on “How
Our Missionary Dollar Is Spent.”
Mrs. Cowan, of Conyers, our dis
trict chairman, was also a wel

Entertained at Buffet Supper Friday
The home of Mrs. H. H. Stone,
in Oxford, was the scene of a buf
fet supper that was served in honor
of the members of the Emory-at
Oxford faculty and their wives last
Friday night. The joint hostesses
were Mesdames Virgil Eady. Charles
Lester and W. O. Dorough.
When the meal was finished the
guests enjoyed several popular

Monday, February 27, meeting at
the church. One hour each after
noon through Friday, at 2:00 o'clock,

nominating committee, presented
the following officers for another
year: Mrs. J. S. Gardner, president;
Mr*. O. W. Porter, vice-president,
and Mrs. L. A. Patrick, secretary.
Mrs. McDonald announced that
