Jack Troy, Sports Editor of The Atlanta Constitution,
was guest speaker at a steak supper last Saturday night
at the Advancemore Club room at Covington Mills. He
shouldn't, along with Tommy Callaway, Rev. Gates and a
few others, he able to look a cow in the face for quite a
while.
Troy proved to be an
interesting talker as
well as a big eater.
His information about
Duke’s Rose Bowl car
ryings-on fell short of
bis tale about the Cali
fornia bed-bug, though.
The California people like •T
to boast. It seems that a cer
tain Georgia fellow was wm
about whipped to a frazzle m .
with their boasting when a %
Californian tried his last
stand. The Californian in
vited the Georgia Cracker mmm
into his hotel room and pul
led the covers off the bed, ! iH
where he had placed a 300 \
lb. turtle. “This is,” he ex
plained, “a California bed- % ■ l‘I
bug.”
“He’s a young one, JACK TROY
ain’t he?” asked the Georgia Cracker,
The thing that made Troy’s visit so touching was the
fact that he was missing a basketball game in Atlanta be-;
tween Georgia Tech and Georgia University, 1
Troy arrived early and mourned to this reporter ;
about the fine game he was missing in Atlanta. However
before he left he was wearing a smile, else it was a mouth
full of steak pushing the wrinkles out.
Everyone had a great time at the supper. The
Advancemore Club certainly knows how to go about
with their eating. The food was prepared and served
by the Woman’s Missionary Society of the Covington
Mills.. The Victory quartet rendered several good
song numbers and the evening as a whole was enjoy
able.
Troy was besieged with questions concerning the At
lanta Crackers’ chance of winning the Southern league
pennant this year. All club members wanted to know if
the pitchig department would hold up through a season
that is bound to be tough.
Troy, like many others, thinks that the Crackers
will be in the pennant fight. He says if the pitching
doesn’t hold up that Earl Mann will be on the job
looking for some new faces.
The Atlanta baseball folk want a winner this year!!

Last year the Porterdale maroons
went to Taylor mill and won out in

Jack Jolly coaching the Porterdale
team the team will win again.
The teams representing Porter

have ever had and everyone is con

hear that Macon can beat Porter

you will think this is the mast excit

Girs Win Out
By Extra Game
Conyers Team in Biggest
Upset Victory of
Tourney.
By SAM TRIBBLE
The Covington Boys won the
fifth annual Yellow’ River League
basketball tournament by defeat
ing Social Circle in Ihe final, 28
to 20, Saturday night at Social
Circle.
Covington boys played fine bas
ketball in every game. Their pass
ing was up to date and they had
an eye for the basket. Cook
played fine ball in every game,
as did Lunsford and Peaches
Smith. The boys deserved to win
Palmer-Stone girls had a hard
time winning out. They stuck in
there and fought and finally came
out on th ebig end. Palmer got
by Covington all right Wednesday
night, but on Friday night they
met a strong and stubborn team
from Loganville. Loganville tool,
an early lead and held it until the
last quarter. Palmer got down to
business and took the lead of two
points with about one minute to
play. Johnson, of Loganville shot
a snowbird to tie the game and
the game ended tied. The two
teams met again Saturday night to
play off the tie game and Palmer
fought hard and won by three i
points. On Monday night. Pal
mer met Mansfield in the finals
and won out by a score of 54 t(
49. This was the fastest and besl
played game in the tournament.
Th» biggest upset came in the
°P enin * same for the boys when,
Conyers upset Palmer-Stone boys
23 to 17. Conyers took the lead
and was never headed. Then
Conyers _ . back , _ Friday • j nigh . , ,
came
against Covington, but met too j
much competition.
The tournament as a whole was
very good, as there were good j
crowds there every night and the
games were fast and interesting
throughout the tournament.
Mr. Wells did a fine job during
the whole tournament. He hand!- j 1
ed all the players well and called
every game as good as anyone
could expect. It was one of the
best tournaments to be played in
