Softball interest around town should he on the boom
now that the leaders have decided to do something about
the brand of ball the fans have been forced to see around
here this season.
The managers of the six clubs in our league got
together Saturday night and cut the league member
ship to four clubs. The players on the two clubs
dropped have been placed K on Bennett-Cofer and Me
.. Kay , s Clubs too some , have , been placed ,, on Southern c ..
Bread and Rainey s team.
it will all fro for faster and better softball m our town.
The fans were growing sick of seeing games that were so
one sided a grass-hopper could guess the winner even be
for the third inning.
Now that only four clubs represent our league
players will have the chance .of getting out of the
game what it is supposed to produce—exercise. Each
club will now play three games per week.
With the old six-club league a team was lucky to get
j" nyo frames a with “ku I
It >v,l . I th.nk, be much better all the way around, this:
four-club league.
It is true that Southern Bread outclassed Bennett
Cofer 13-4 Monday but then the new players that
Bennett-Cofer has put on the club have not adjusted
themselves as yet. McKay’s team has not been in
action yet but everyone has the feeling that McKay’,
team d.dn t need j much iii help. .
If the leaders can get together and arrange for the
election of a league president and the hiring of a league
umpire, the four-team league should round into one of
much interest to the lovers of softball in this section.
A league umpire is needed badly. Something should
he done about it. When they pass around the hat at the
games, drop in a quarter or two, it will be a lorig step to
wards getting an official umpire. ■
CRACKERS BACK AT HOME
Thc Atlanta Crackers have returned from a stormy
road trip and are this week-end battling the Little Rock
club in Atlanta.
The Crackers made big strides this and last week.
They won eight games in a row and then lost three in a
line only to move into Atlanta this week and win three in
a clump. And, these last three victories were chalked up
over the Chattanooga Lookouts, hot pennant contenders.
These three wins over Chattanooga are the tip
off on Manager Paul Richards’ boys. They have the
wherewithal and you can count on ’em coming down
that home stretch after another pennant.
The Little Rock series will open with a game
Friday night. There will be a single game Saturday
afternoon and a double-header Sunday.
Covington fans have been flocking to the Cracker
games and now that the Atlanta club has proven itself
as championship material by bumping off Chattanooga
three straight, Newton County should draw down a good
vote in the grandstand this week-end.
