County consolidation continues
to be whooped up vigorously, but
the whooping comes from a half
a dozen or more big cities in Geor
gia. You do not hear any whoop
ing for it from the smaller coun
ties, and you won’t hear any.
County consolidation would give
the control of the' State govern
ment into the hands of about a
dozen big counties, and there you
have the milk in the cocoanut,
and also the darkey in the wood
pile of the consolidation whoopee.
Rush Burton, editor of the La
vonia Times, is recognized as one
of the ablest editors in the coun
try. Regarding the consolidation
whoopee, he pertinently says:
“No doubt an effort is being
made, or will be made, lo starve
the rural counties of Georgia into
consolidation, on the theory that
two little hungry counties put to
gether will' not make a big hun
gry county. Put two hungry pigs
together and you have the same
hunger you had before. Consoli

dating counties will not aid in
solving their economic problems.
“There will be no fewer schools,
no less of any service than is now
rendered by small counties, The
only difference will be the added
expense of many people by hav
ing to travel farther to their coun
ty sites and the added expense of
enlarging the court house and
jail. A lot of people who advocate
county consolidation have never I
thought of the question seriously,
or else know little or nothing of
the problems of small counties.”
Another alert and able editor,
E. E. Lee, of the Warrenton Clip
per, quotes and emphasizes and
indorses the remarks on county
consolidation by Attorney-General
PAGE SEVEN
Ellis Arnall, in a recent address
before the County and Peace Of
ficers Association at Savannah, in
which he said:
“Some day our people are going
to realize that low taxes come
from good county management,
regardless of the size of the coun
ty. While-some counties give more
services to their people than do
others, the determining factor in
the county tax rate is county
management.’’
