It seems that the Covington Mill Trojans have pulled i
Themselves together at last and now stand ready and
willing to win the last half of the Textile Pacific baseball
league race.
The Trojan* beat Eatonton last Saturday after
noon at the local park in a good ball game, 4-1.
Beatty Hackett, one of the beat dropball pitchers I
have ever seen, was in rare form, letting the in
vaders down with seven measley hit*.
The team as a whole played good ball. The only
error chalked up for the day went to Wint Bledsoe, Tro
ian second baseman. It was a close plav and required
quickneM in throwing the ball. A fair crowd attended
an. d everyone was pelased except Eatonton_.it being their
third straight defeat in the last half pennant chase,
One player that stands out in the recovery of the
Trojans is Preston German, shortstop. He is going
all over the lot fielding balls that have been tagged
for base hits. He has mastered the art of going
backwards to catch pop-ups which fall for hits off
most of the shortstops in our league.
Wint Bledsoe, veteran second baseman, is due much
credit for the improvements in German’s play. A second
baseman can make a shortstop or break one; Bledsoe has
chosen to make one. Bledsoe has taught German so much
that the hoy has confidence ip himself now. Too, he has
a lot of confidence in Wint. He has now learned to cut
that ball over to the bag when he gets it—ever confident
that Wint will be there.
German used to hold the ball to see if the second
baseman was on the bag before throwing. He has
grasped the general idea now that his place is to
throw the ball to the hag—the second baseman is sup
posed to be there! If he isn’t it is no fault of the
shortstop. To do this a shortstop must have confi
dence in the second baseman. Wint Bledsoe knew
this and went to work on buidling up German’t con
fidence in both him and himself. It is now a plain
fact that the Trojans have the best "double killings"
pair in the league.
A winning ball club must have a good shortsto-p and
second baseman. Since German bas learned to play the
ball instead of letting the ball play him there has been
quite a difference in the scores. In the late innings of a
close game when the pitcher is weakening a bit, a fast
double play is just the tonic for him to get that next
batter “outta there.”
Someone stop Whitehall!
Will someone please stop Whitehall!
Whitehall is leading the Textile Pacific baseball
league with three victories and no defeats. Saturday they
play Eatonton, who has lost three and have won "nary a
yame.” If Eatonton could bump Whitehall off and Cov
jug-foil could pin Greensboro’s ears back, the locals would
leading the league.
Thus far in this last half race Whitehall has
defeated Eatonton once (the only time they played)
and Greensboro twice. Now, in the first half of the
pennant fight Eatonton was the only club in the cir
cuit that could really work on Chapel Tate, ace hurler
for Whitehall.
There is a good chance of Eatonton pulling up their
boot tsraps Saturday and beating the stuffings out of the
legue leaders. And, too, there is a good chance of Coving
ton getting spilled by Greensboro Saturday in Greenie
town.
Cliff Hunt, who does pitching duties for Greens
boro, is not to be sneezed at when it comes to winning
a baseball game from him. Cliff can shoot that ball
across the old platter with plenty of zip and he has a
good ball club behind him, too.
It is hoped that Covington Mill will not take Greens
boor too lightly. That they will go to Greenie Town Sat
urday with a fighting spirit that will excell anything
Manager Rrooks’ outfit can offer.
It won’t be easy to beat Greensboro, but the locals
have the team with which to do it and a victory Saturday
won’t hurt local attendance any!

BY CLARENCE WILSON
GREENSGORO, Ga—The league -
leading Whitehall team whipped
Greenshoro Saturday by a score of
3 to 2. Greensboro tallied in the
first and second and held their two
run lead up until the eighth inning,
when Whitehall tied the score and
scored again in the ninth to win.
Chapel Tate pitched a fine game,
giving Greensboro only five hits.
Black was best for Whitehall in the
field, when he did the impossible
on two plays. Ginn hit best for
Whitehall with two singles for four
trips to the plate. Booth was best
for Greensboro at bat and also in
the field, He had a double and
single for three times at bat and
also went over the bank in right
field to Rob Bray of a two-bagger
and kept Whitehall from' scoring.
McEihanon also had a line home
run into left field for three trips.
Hunt wasn't quite as effective as
usual, striking out only five.
Umpire Clayton had a hard job
keeping down a couple of fights
when the Greensboro and White -
hall boys came close 10 mixing in
the sixth, A few more incidents al-,
most caused some more trouble.
Greensboro has a reputation of be- 1
ing a good clean team and other
teams like to come to Greensboro
on that account. Manager Brooks
requires his players to be other fair at all J
•imes and love to play teams
of the same type.
Greensboro engages Covington in
a game at Brooks Park Saturday,
which promises to be a good game.

Second—Buren Henderson.
Third—John Andrews.
There was lots of inierest in the

with George Elliot and Jack Porter.
About 90 per cent of the golf mem

eighteen holes. Luke Barnes on his
second nine holes suceeded in shoot

incidentally he is the only person
