Miss Eleanor Piper and Mr. Preston
To Wed at Home Ceremony January

Piper of the engagement of their
daughter. Miss Eleanor Piper, to
John T. Preston. Jr. The marriage of
this popular couple wall be solem
nized on January 3 at the home of
the bride's parents.
Miss Piper's mother is the form
er Miss Lillian Lee Still, of Con
yers. She is the sister of Miss Dor
othy Piper, of Covington, and Mar
lon Piper, of Salisbury, N. C.
The bride-elect attended Coving
ton High School and graduated
from Georgia State college for Wo
men at Milledgeville with a B A.
degree- She was president of her
graduating class and a member of
the Pi Mu honorary society. She
later studied at the University of
Georgia and at Emory University.

The Covington Garden Club met
Wednesday afternoon. December 6,
at the home of Mrs. J. E. Phillips
Mesdames J- R. Sams, Tom Swann
J. L. Callaway and O W. Porter
were co-hostesses. The business ses
sion was presided over by the

mas home decorations were discussed
and it was decided to give three
prizes for the most beautiful home
decorations. These to be judged on
Wednesday before Christmas. Mrs.

“Color and Design in Flower Ar
rangements,” and showed great re

The Mansfield Methodist Mis
sionary Society held its December
meeting at the church. Mrs. Usher
Smith, hostess. Music preceeded the
program. The program was in
charge of Mrs. J. P. Williams, as
sisted by Mrs. W. C. Patrick, Mrs.
Carl Harwell, Mrs. Ed Adams and

The December meeting, of the Ser
geant New'ton Chapter D. A. R. was
held Wednesday afternoon at the
home of Miss Sallie Mae Sockwell
on Floyd Street, with Mesdames
R. M. Mobley and R. C. Guinn and
J. A. Wright as co-hostesses.
Mrs. Leon Cohen, first vice-regent
presided in the absence of Mrs. L
D. Bolton. The meeting was opened
with the song, “America,” followed
with prayer by Mrs. Cohen. Flag
Salutes were led by Flag Chairman.

Miss Eleanor Piper, whose engagement to John J. Preston, Jr.,
has been announced by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Piper, A
picturesque home ceremony will unite in marriage this popular couple
on January 3rd.

In Honor Miss Piper, Mr. Preston
a member of the faculty of
Covington public schools.
Mr. Preston is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. John Troy Preston, Sr„ of
Monroe. His mother is the former
Miss Leila Breedlove, of Monroe,
and his father is serving as rep
resentative from Walton county in
the state legislature. Mrs Bruce C.
Roberson, of Milledgeville is his on
ly sister, and his brother is Bill
Preston of Mercer University.
After graduating from Monroe
High school, he attended the Geor
gia School of Technology in Atlan
ta, where he received his bachelor
of science degree, and where he was
a member of the Chi Psi social fra
ternity. He later did graduate work
at the University of Georgia and is
now affiliated in business with the
United States post office in Mon
roe.

The guests were invited into the
dining room for tea. The Christmas
motif was earned out in the table
arrangement and refreshments. The
table held for a centerpiece a mound
of artificial holly leaves topped by
a bubble bowl, containing red nan
dina berries. On either side, antique
iron candelabra held red
tapers. Mrs. Sams sat at one end
of the table and served salad which
resembled a huge Christmas wreath,
Mrs. Tom Swann poured tea and
they were assisted in serving by the
other hostesses.

marriage will be an important event
in January, was the dinner party
on Wednesday evening, at which
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hawkins were
hosts at their home on Oak Street.

Emory at Oxford Annual Christmas
Party to Be Given Saturday
The annual Christmas party in
Candler Hall Library Saturday eve
ning. December 16. will climax the
social activities at Emory Junior
for this year. According to an an
nouncement made today by the so
cial committee, it will be an open
house affair from 8 until 10 o'clock.

Presbyterian Woman's Auxiliary
Held Meeting Monday Afternoon
The Woman's Auxiliary of the.
P res byterian Church met in the ,
church parlors on Monday after
noon with twenty members present.
The room was beautifully decor
ated with ferns and Christmas

The meeting opened with the song
“Joy to the World,” and Dr. Gates
led the opening prayer.

Foreign Missions Observed by B. W. M. S ,
The Lottie Moon season of prayer
for Foreign Missions was observed
by the Baptist Woman's Missionary
Society on Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday of last week.
On Tuesday, Mrs. R H Patterson
taught, in a most impressive way,
“Constraining Love.” a book de
signed /to prepare the women in
heart and mind for the week of
prayer.
Mrs. N. S. Turner was the leader
of Wednesday's program, the theme
being, “God’s Love.” The fields
studied were Nigeria, Spain, Italy
Jerusalem and China, and those
taking part on the program were
Mrs. Walker Combs, Mrs. A S. Hop
kins, Mrs. R. H. Greene, and Mrs.
O. «. King.

son and Misses Giles, Roach, Carl
ton will aid in serving the refresh
ments.
The library decorations will reflect
the Christmas spirit.

Mrs. Wm. Berry asked that all
the ladies save Ivory Soap wrappers
and Oxydol tops from now till
January 4th, since she could sell
them and use the money for a spec
ial project for the church.

presented an inspiring program of
song and scripture, she was as
sisted on the program by Mrs. J.
S. Gardner, Mrs. J B. Downs, Mrs.
Mrs. R. C. Guinn. Mrs. W. M. Mor
cock, Mrs. James Gardner. Jr. Mrs
Geo. Stauffacher and Mrs. J. O
Bradshaw. An offering of $10.00 for
a joy gift to ministerial relief was
received at this time.
Delicious cakes and ambrosia were
served by Mrs. G. W. Caldwell’s
Circle.

of the program on Thursday The
devotional was led by Mrs. Clif
ford Campbell. Facts concerning
our work in Argentina, Uruguay.
Brazil, Japan and Mexico, were giv
en by Mrs. Thornley. Mrs. Yar
brough. Mrs. A. S. Hopkins. Mrs. H.
B. Floyd and Mrs. R. H. Greene
The program on Friday was led
by Mrs Walker Combs. Mrs. Sealey
told of work in Mexico, Mrs. Tra
vis told of conditions in the Near
East and Mrs. H. B. Floyd had an
interesting paper on China. Man
churia and Japan.
A nice offering for foreign mis
sions was the result of these inspir
ational services.
Paintings of F. Richardson Murray
To Re Exhibited Today at Library
An exhibit of the painting of F.
Rieharson Murray, one of New
York's most famous artists, will be
shown today (Thursday) from 3 to
5 o'clock at t.he Covington Library,
A rare opportunity offered to the
people of this vicinity, the exhibit is
open to the public and is being
sponsored by the Covington Wo
man's Club under the supervision
of Mrs. Rufus Henry Patterson,
chairman of fine arts committee.
Outstanding among the works of
Mr Murrary to be shown are the
portraits in pastel of some of Cov
ington’s most prominent citizens,
done since his stay in the city- Also
on display will be a number of
paintings in water color of familiar
“Daddies' Night" Observed Recently by
Covington Parent-Teacher Association
The P.-T. A. of Covington school
observed Daddies’ night on Mon
day evening, December 11. with an
attendance of around 200. The fac
ulty and representative students
from each grade acted as hosts on
this occasion.
Upon arrival at the school build
ing parents were greeted in the
halls by Supt. and Mrs. C E. Haw
kins. “Identification Tags’’ in the
form of Christmas bells, Christmas
trees or Christmas candles were
pinned on each one and they were
invited into the school auditorium
for the P.-T. A. meeting.
Mrs. Lamar Smith, president,
called the meeting to order.
Dean George Roach, of Emory
Junior College, gave a very Im
pressive devotional, using the 12th
chapter of Romans for the scrip
ture lesson. He offered a fervent
prayer of thanksgiving to God for
our children, our teachers and our
schools and invoked His blessing
upon them
Mrs. Smith conducted the usual
routine of business so that the Dads
might see just how the mothers
and teachers carry on a P.T. A. She
named the various committees and
explained the duties of t..ese,
Mrs. Nix's section of the sixth'
grade won the prize in the mem
bership drive recently ended- The
tenth grade, Mrs. Luke Robinson,
teacher, won the attendance prize
for this meeting.
Mrs. Smith stated that the P.-T.
A. would use some of the money
made ft the County Fair as a nu
cleus for a fund to buy a piano for
the gymnasium
Mrs. O. W. Porter was unani
mously elected president to fill the
unexpired term of Mrs. Smith who
leaves January 1, with her fam
ily, to reside in Jacksonville. Fla.
It is with genuine regret that we
give up Mrs. Smith for she has been
such a capable leader. She has in
jected new life into our P-T. A
and it has done splendid work un
der her guidance.
Mr. Hawkins expressed his ap
preciation of Mrs. Smith and the
association gave her a rising vote
of thanks. She in turn expressed
her gratitude to parents, teachers
and friends of the school for their
splendid cooperation in every un
dertaking. She urged that this same
spirit be shown the new president
Mrs. Porter.
Mr. Hawkins had charge of the
program which consisted of a tour
over the school building. Each room
was beautifully decorated for the
holiday season and teachers and

pupils were most, gracious in their
hospitality. The work of the stud
ents just as they do it every day
was on exhibition and was most
interesting to mothers and daddies
who haven’t seen inside a school
room over a period of years.
This tour probably could have
lasted all night, but there was a
screeching sound from the fire
alarm and everyone followed the
leader to the new gymnasium where
delicious cookies and punch were
served by the Home Economics class.
