Miss Caroline Candler Spoke Tuesday
at Meeting of Covington Woman's Club
Miss Caroline Candler was guest
speaker at the March meeting of |
the Covington Woman’s Club, 1
which met Tuesday afternoon at
the Library.
Miss Candler, introduced by
Mrs. L. D. Bolton, spoke most en
tertainingly on family life in
France. She studied for a year at
Tours and Paris during which
time she lived in private homes
and brought a most interesting
description of the lives of French
people. In comparison to the Am
ericans Miss Candler stated the
French are a much more serious
minded people. Miss Candler

Held Monday Afternoon at Church
The March meeting of the Bap
tist W. M. S. was held at the
church on March 4, 1940. Mrs. W.
D. Travis called the meeting to
order. The Lord’s Prayer in con
cert followed the singing of the
Doxology, The watchword for the
year was repeated in concert. The
hymn for the year “How Firm a
Foundation,” was read by Mrs.
Vera Hooten with Mrs. Clifford
Campbell at the piano. The min
utes of the February meeting and
the minutes of the executive board
meeting were read and approved.
The apportionments and goals
were read by the president and
adopted by the unanimous vote
of the society.

en by the various consellors. Be

Mrs. J. E. Hutchins, treasurer,
reported that she had on hand
$8.05 for the co-operative program
in addition to $10.00 from the
demonstrations. The offering for
the afternoon was $9.00.

plans and recommended that Roy

background for monthly pro
grams. She suggested that the
circles be divided into commit
tees for entertainment, programs,

the meetings to be at the church
at three-thirty.
Mrs. T. L. McMullan, personal
service chairman suggested that
personal service work be carried
on as last year and she gave a list
of activities for the circles to fol
low.

delegate to the W. M. U. conven
tion in Savannah. Mrs. Walker j
Combs, Mrs. N. S. Turner and Mrs. I
J. E. Hutchins were named as al
ternates.

ian Auxiliary met Monday after
noon with Mrs. J. B. Downs, at
her home on Conyers Street. Ele

and the meeting was opened with
prayer by Mrs. O. W. Porter. As
this was the last meeting of the
church year Mrs. P. J. Garrison,
treasurer made a yearly report on
the work of the circle. Mr. Mc

wedding plans of Miss Caroline
Candler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Candler, of Madison and

mony takes place in Madison on
March 28, at 8 o'clock at the First
Methodist Church.

Emory University, will officiate,
and a program of nuptial music
will be presented by Mrs. M. E.
Goijde. Mr. Candler will give his
daughter in marriage, and Van
Garlington Hunt, only brother of
the groom-elect, will be best man.

on March 12 with a speaker from
the Extension Service.

afternoon, February 26, at the Mt.
Pleasant Methodist Church. The
meeting was opened with the song

by a prayer by Miss Bert Winter.

The Methodist Missionary So
ciety met on Monday afternoon,
March 4, at the home of Mrs. C.
D. Ramsey, Jr.
Mrs. Randall presided. She ex
tended a welcome to Mrs. Pauline
Jarman. Mrs. Jarman has been
away for a long time and we are
all glad indeed to have her with
us.
The Lord’s prayer was repeated
in unison.
Mrs. Loyd, treasurer, gave her
monthly report, Minutes were
read and approved with the addi
tion of Mrs. Touchstone’s name
to the hostess committee of Feb
ruary.
Miss Belcher, chairman for
World Outlook, asked that as
many members as possible give
her a subscription. She gave a few
publicity points and then it was
suggested we send a box of sup

month. Further plans will be
made at the circle meetings.
Mrs. R. R. Fowler, Sr., was
asked to make a scrapbook for the
society.
Mrs. Corrie Wright is to write

send it in to the “Advocate” for
the Missionary Society.
Mrs. Randall expressed her
thanks for the cooperation of all
who had a part in planning and
serving the luncheon held recent
ly at the church. She also reported
having received a letter of thanks
from Mrs. Lilly.

this month was the life of “Isabel
la Thoburn—Creator of Ideals.”
Mrs. Harper asked the question,
“Are we living creatively?”
Mrs. Willie Reid gave the med
itation. The thought was of truth,
beauty and goodness. A Christian's
obligation is to live creatively and
thus be a living testimony of God’s
goodness.
Mrs. Harper told of the early
life and training of Isabella Tho
burn. Even in early life she
worked constructively at every
thing.
Mrs. Clarence Meadors told of
her work among the women of
India. Mrs. Meadors said “No peo
ple rise above the intelligence of
their women.” The school Isabella
Thoburn established was a center
of harmonious mission work
among all classes. It produced
leaders and teachers who are car
rying on the work. She died at
the age of 61 but the forces she
set to work still live.
