MINIATURE WAISTS, SLIM CLINGINGLINES IN NEW DRESSES
American Designers Create
“Double Silhouette” Trend
Varying their collections
American ingenuity,
dasjgners create delightful
frocks with “smallest
waistlines,” and either slim
ing skirts or wide swaying ones
A double trend growing out of
chic s.mplicity preferred by
American women, and the
lu desire for perpetual
® in their clothes, gives to the Spring
” fashion picture a dual effect. Mi
lady may be suave and sophisti
cated in the new sl.m draped
gowns, or she may swing along in
strictly 1940 fashion with wide
rippling hemline in her short skirt,
But always, her waistline is tiny
and trim, her bodice either sleekly
fitted or softly molded. And her
sleeves may be amusingly puffed
out at shoulders, or very simple.
Distinctly wearable, the new
American fashions, are created
for American activities. Sports cos
tumes are as youthful and gayly
colorful, yet as simply designed as
only American designers can cre
ate them. Daytime clothes sub
scribe to the rigid simplicity of
lailored wear, and afternoon frocks

larger-than-ever pockets placed
casually high at the hipline. Shir
rings and tuckings give softness
to the tops of dresses and the V
neckline is again popular although
the “sweetheart” neck is shown in
many soft dresses. Cut-outs, tuck

further variation There is a little
embroidery, a deft use of braiding
or Trapunto work, but in general
manipulation of fabric accounts
for the elaboration and trimming
on most costumes.
Swirling tucks, slimly tapered
gores, wide rippled circular ef

give new interest to skirts. Fitted
waistlines and basque treatments
accentuate the rippling fullness
of some skirts. Softly draped hip
lines and front fullness give ac

other skirts. Tiers are shown, and
amusing bell-tunics are quaint
and pert in some youthful models,
The slim tunics liked by some wo
men are in evidence here and
there, but in general the skirtline
is designed to create an effect of
height unbroken.
Dramatic Evening Fashions

“Tropic Tones” are featured by the “Fourcasters” Club
in hat, bag, belt and Merry Hull gloves. All are dye
bathed in exactly matching tropic tones approved by
fashion experts.
Coats Feature
“Cash-’N-Carry” Pockets 1
Casual yet dressy, the new i
Spring coats give evidence of
thoughtful design, and distinguish
their American creators with their;
novel details and new silhouettes.
Sack pleats hanging in full sweep
from shoulder yokes, slim semi
fitted box coats with low rippling
fullness, and concave-waisted
coats with full ripple skirts, are
among the new fashions launched
for Easter.
Definitely tailored in most re
spects, the new coat fashions are
not mannish, nor severe. A few
shown with shoulder capes and
double-breasted button treatments
suggest the military: but in most
of their creations American de
signers have avoided this treat
ment. Huge “saddle pockets” and
smart belt treatments are new
looking.
“Motor Coats*’ Feature
Huge Side Pockets
New among the casual coats are
the “motor coats” with their huge
pockets and casual swinr“ng lines.
The pockets are placed low, some
of them near the hemline, and
are large square-shaped with tai
lored flaps or sti«tchinge. Other
casual styles feature the simple
box lines preferred by many
women, with high lapels and un
usual pocket treatment, sometimes
trimmed with intricate seamings, f
selvage edgings, tucks, or buttons.
In the new light beiges and neu
tral tones they are sporty, while
they are generally wearable in
dark colors.
Shoulders are concave in some
models, or round-squared in oth
ers, but never with severe or mas
culine look. Although tailored
coats in reefer style are very pop
ular, again the feminine details,
front and back seamings, sleek
princess lines and refined lapels
and pockets give these a feminine
air. A few casual coats are shown
with new kimono shoulders, and
deeper lines for roominess. Others
have simple shoulder treatment
and loose hanging sleeves.
