Sportswear Style Centers
Nineteen forty promises to be an American year as far
as sportswear is concerned. With conditions abroad uncer- i

Hollywood and the West Coast have long been recog

sportswear and the colors and designs originated there and

MANY TROPICAL WORSTED !
For late spring suits and for
summer wear, there is an increase
in tropical worsted fabrics this
spring. American designers are
doing an excellent job on these
suits. Many of them are tailored
by experts and the old idea that
the summer light weight suit had
neither form nor design can be
discarded entirely. Tropi-cal worst
eds this year will also come in
plaids and stripes and again the
single-breasted suit will be in the
ascendency.
Smart New Sport
Jackets
The extra sport jacket now so
popular in America can be traced
directly to the college student who
absorbed the style from Engli-sh
universities where for many years
gray flannel slacks and brown
tweed jackets were almost a regu
lation uniform.
We have, however, gone far
since the first importation of these
coats. Almost every man now has
at least one extra sport jacket and

materials for these jackets. Many
of them have side vents although
the center vent still remains the
most popular.

AMERICAN MEN NOW FAVOR
COVERT CLOTH FOR TROUSERS
Covert cloth, which sprang into
popularity several seasons ago as
an ideal material for topcoats and,
in some cases, for suits as well, is
now generally seen as a favorite
material for slacks. It has, in many i
localities, even replaced gray flan
nel, and its lightness and ciosely
woven texture are ideal.

In the necktie field for 1940
there are two new notes. One is
the return of the narrow crochet
ed or knit tie which can be pur
chased in either wool or wool and
silk mixtures. These come in solid
colors and stripes, and promise to
be a favorite everywhere,
The second new note is the in
creasing popularity of the wool
four-in-hand. While many of these
in the past have been imported
from Ireland and Scotland, they
are now being made in quantity
by some of the largest mills in
America. Their colors are soft and
mellow, running to grays, blues,
shades of brown and deeper shades
of red.
