Funeral services for Mrs. W. C.
Rollins, 64, who died at her resi
dence in Atlanta last Sunda,y were
held from the Porterdale First
Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon
at four o clock. Rev. L. M. Lyda
officiated and was assisted
Rev. Silvian, pastor of the Hills
Baptist Church. Interment was at
Covington cemetery.
Mrs. Rollins came to Porterdale
in 1917, where she joined the First
Baptist Church more than 20
ago. She moved to Atlanta in 1925
and made her home there until
her death last Sunday.
She is survived by her hus
band, four daughters, Mrs. Lois
Oldfield, Huntsville, Ala.; Mrs. T.
C. Johnson, Porterdale, Ga.; Mrs.
Kate Edmondson, Jacksonville,
Fla.; Mrs. C. H. Railey, Atlanta;
two sons, Harvey L., of Porter
dale and Albert Rollins) Atlanta;
two brothers, J. F. Dewberry, Ac
worth, Ga.; C. E. Dewberry, of
Rome, Ga. The News extends sym

Regular Meeting
Kiwanis Club
Fred Birchmore Is Speaker
At Meeting of The
Club.
The Covington Kiwanis Club
held its regular noon meeting at
the Delaney Hotel Thursday noon
with President A1 David presiding
and Virgil Y. C. Eady leading the
singing.
J. I. Alford, textile production
manager of the Covington Mills,
was received as a new member
and Abe Loyd did the honors for
the club. George Cochran was
also welcomed back after with
drawing for a long time due to
illness.
W. Thomas Hay was present as
the guets of Belmont Dennis and
Charlie Sockwell was the guest of
John Birchmore.
The program was in charge of
S. A. Ginn, but the speaker,
Birchmore, noted author and world
traveler, was introduced by his
uncle, John Birchmore.
Mr. Birchmore spoke most in
terestingly of his experiences in
traveling around the world on a
bicycle and also of his recent
honeymoon to South America on
a bicycle built tot two. His charm
ing bride was present also and
was introduced.
Mr. Birchmore paid his respects
to the fortitude and courage of his
young bride, stating of all noted
athletes who had been his com
panions on bicycle tours, none had
evidenced the courage and stamina
of his young bride.
The stories told by the young
explorer and author were fasci
nating and evidenced considerable
courage by one so young and ap
parently of slight physique. His
bride also is barely fife feet and
weighs less than 100 pounds. They
make a very attractive couple and
their future adventures will be
watched with much interest by
those who know them.

odist Church will present an Eas
ter pageant, “Glory of Easter
Tide” at 8 o’clock Sunday night
at the Almon Methodist church.

For Sam A. Ivey
Funeral services for Mr. Sam
A. Ivey, 54, wiio died at his home
at Starrsville last Monday morn
ing, were held Tuesday morning
at 11 o’clock from the Starrsville
church. Rev. Vickery officiated
and interment was at the Starrs
ville church yard.
He is survived by his mother.
Mrs. Chesley Ivey, five daugh
ters, Mrs. Mabel Cagle, Misses Lo
rine, Maggie Ruth, Emma Gene.
Mrs. Dorothy Johnson; four
I. D., Reuben, Dadius and Willie
Ivey, five sisters, Mrs. Clara

For Reuben Parish
Funeral services for Mr. Reu
ben H. Parish, 57, who died at
his home in LeGuinn District last
Sunday, were held from the Love
joy Methodist Church
morning at 11 o’clock. Rev.
field, Pastor, officiated. Interment
was in the churchyard.
Mr. Parish came to Newton
County when a small boy with his
parents. He spent the remainder
of his life in Covington,
dale and Newton County. He
a member of the Lovejoy Metho
dist Church. His many friends
throughout this section morn his
passing.
He is survived by two daugh
ters, Mrs. E. V. Curtis and Mrs.
E. H. Mobley, of Covington, RFD
four; two sons, Howard and J. W.
Parish, both of Covington; one
brother, W. F. Parish, of Coving
ten and seven grandchildren. The

ports of committees were heard

gram Committee’s efforts in the
recent “Ladies’ Night.” A financ
ial report was made by the sec
retary and was approved. J. T.
McKay was named to head the
committee for “Stunt Night” at
the Gymnasium.

Mr. John Sowell
Taken By Death
Mr. John B. Sowell was born I
in Henry County, Ga., 37 years
ago and died in Atlanta, March I
11. The body was laid io rest at
the Bethany Baptist Church in
Henry County, March 12, after
the funeral services conducted by
Rev. L. M. Lyda, pastor of Por
terdale Baptist Church, assisted
by Rev. Carr, of Atlanta.
Brother Sowell joined the Beth
any Baptist Church fifteen years
ago and lived a true Christian
life up to the time of his going
home to be with the Master, whom
he loved and served. x
He leaves a wife, two children,
Virginia, 16, J. B., 11; a mother,
Mrs. Joseph Sowell; 4 sisters, Mrs. I
J. H. Crawford, Mrs. J. H. Huston,
Mr jS . Z. H. Price, Mrs. J. H. Wil
kinson; and four brothers, Ches- 1
ter, Sam, George and Walter; and i
one aunt, Mrs. Stearns, of At- j
lanta. A good man has gone from
us. Our loss is his gain.
