Hays' District Woman's Club Held
Meeting on Wednesday Afternoon

District Woman’s Club was held
at the club house Wednesday af
ternoon April 3, with Mrs. G. S
Allen and Mrs. A. C. Belcher as
associate hostesses.
Mrs. C. U. Skinner gave the
devotional. In the absence of the
president, and vice president, Mrs.
C. C. Epps presided.

Fifth grade, Miss Annie Laurie
Turner, teacher, won the attend
ance prize
Treasurer, Mrs. Carlton, report
ed a health fund of $49.50, special
fund for high school $30.00, and
a general fund of $186.56 in our
treasury.
It was decided to add $70 to the
high sc hool fund and use this $100
on the piano fund. $50.00 was
given to the library for new books
Mrs Hawkins stated that the state
would match our money, thus en
abling us to buy $100 worth of new
books for our library at cost. The
health fund will be used for the
summer round-up and also for
immediate treatments for chil
dren in school who have not had
serums and vaccination.
Mrs. J - L Alford gave an in
teresting report of district meet
ing in Eatonton.
Mrs. H. B. Floyd was elected
delegate to state convention in
Brunswick.

of Garden Club at Recent Meeting

scene on Wednesday afternoon,
April 2nd of the regular monthly
meeting of the Covington Garden
Club. Entertaining with Mrs. King
were Mesdames J. C. Upshaw, W.
D. Travis, George Stauffacher, W.
H. Gaither and R. R. Fowler Sr.

For Tenth Annual Spring Flower Show
Plans are being made for the
annual spring flower show, which
w jjj celebrate the 10th annivers
ary of [ be Covington Garden
Club’s first show. The show will
be held in the Covington High
School gymnasium some time dur
ing the month of May, the exact
date to be announced later, and
will be opened to all amateur
flower growers throughout the
county, whether members or not
of any garden club.
Council officers consist of Mrs.
E. E. Callaway, president emeri
tus; Mrs. R. H. Patterson, presi
dent, and Mrs. I. H. Rainwater,
chairman of judges. The commit
tee for receipt of entries is com
posed of Mrs. George Cochran,
chairman, Mrs, S. A. Ginn and
Mrs. Leon Cohen.

The Sallie Sowell Circle* of the
Porterdale Baptist Missionary So
ciety met at the home of
Fannie Burch on Tuesday evening,
April 2nd. The Devotional was led
by Mrs. Frank Burns, after which
the Watch Word was repeated in

The annual meeting of the
Stone Mountain W, M. U. was held
on April 3rd at Stone Mountain,
the meeting being held in the
lovely new Baptist Church.
The theme for the program,
which began at ten o’clock, was
“Be ye steadfast.” The subject for
the devotional conducted by Mrs.
J. T. Alford was (‘Steadfastness
in Witnessing.”
Mrs. S. S. Perkins, president of
the local W, M. S. extended
greetings.
Mrs. J. A. Bruce, the efficient
superintendent of the Stone Moun
tain W. M. U. in her address,
“Whereunto We Have Attained”
told of the achievements and
the goals of the organization.
"Rewards of Faithfulness” was
the subject discussed by the Dis
trict secretaries, Mrs. A. N. Part
ridge represented the First Dis
trict.
The missionary address was
made by Mrs. Scott Patterson,
wife of Dr. Scott Patterson, mis
sionary to Nigeria. This was an
earnest and inspiring message.
At noon a bountiful and delic

Mrs. T. C. Meadors and Mrs.
T. U. Smith tied for first place for
the best flower arrangement. Mrs.
Meadors exhibited an arrangement
of tulips and white narcissus and
Mrs. Smith epergne with white
tapers and apple b'ossoms. The
horticulture awards were present
ed Mrs. O. W. Porter for japoni
cas and Mrs. Belmont Dennis for
iris. Mrs. Jack Swann, of Atlanta,
was welcomed as a visitor.
At the close of the meeting the
hostesses entertained at an infor
mal reception. The decorations in
the dining room featured a color
motif of green and white. The
table was graced with a dainty
arrangement of white narcissus,
interspersed with fern and flanked
on either side with crystal can

Mixon Woman’s Club, which held
its regular meeting April 3rd at
the club house.
The meeting opened with the

devotional, ‘conducted by Mrs.
Hugh Aiken.
Mrs. Oscar Grant, the president,
read the Club Women’s Goal for
1940, and Mrs. Wlibur Johnson
read the poem, “A Happy Day.”
