REDUCTION OF COTTON
Domestic and foreign consump
tion prospects now indicate that
the world carryover of American
cotton on August 1, 1940, is like
ly to be about one million bales
smaller than the record high car
ryover of 14 million bales on Au
gust 1, 1939, the Bureau of Agri
cultural Economics reports The
carryover in the United States
seems likely to be about two mil
lion bales less than at the begin
ning of the current season—when
the total was about 13 million
bales — but stocks of American
j cotton in foreign countries are ex
| pected to increase by one million
bales or more The world carry
over will be the third largest on
record and about two-fifths larg
e r than the 10-year (1929-38) av.
