Porterdale
rattle
BY MARY LANE
We were honored recently by a
visit from Mr. J. R. Ham and his
| family, Editor of from the Cordele. Crisp County Mr. Ham News is
and down South Georgia way folks
call him “Country” Ham. He
brought us along a copy of his
paper and we particularly liked
his editorial page, which he does
all by himself. “A man still has
' something to be thankful for,” he
says, “he has to buy all members
of the family a driver's license,
but the y can a11 use the same ta g.”
Mentioning tags reminds me of
politics. We really met dagger
eyes on every corner after sticking
our neck out about our political
views voiced last week. But we
couldn’t argue back because we
don’t know enough about politics.
(After all, what have we got to
lose Jackson? Our support couldn’t
possibly be of any influence. We’re
neitheb one of us old enough to
vote anyway!) So there!—you po
litical arguers! . . . And now for a
little prattle . . . Center Porterdale
is at last receiving a little rain.
Folks in Covington, ’ across the riv
er, from . the country, and , other ,.
folks . , have , been , bragging _ • about v*
their ,, . cool . showers, , ’ but . . folks , ,, in
my „ neighborhood . , , , , hadn’t ,
seen a
drop . of , that ,, . rain . at , the ., ,. time. ... We
, beginning . to . think ... . part
were our
of town was allergic to rain, while
QUr „ other gide Qf the river „ neigh

bors were basking in the Golden
raindrops from God - s golden heav _
en.—Now we mustn’t get onto that
t business which threatens
t0 be our ruination and maybe
I put us out of circulation ......
FLASH _ The bug bringing the
| bgll layerg back from Columbus
arrived home safely at 2 A . M.
Sunday morning. (So we hear—
rsonally we were in Dreamland
at , he time-) .... The R. A’s.
Boy’s Club sold ice cream at the
movies Friday night. Almost put
“By By’’ Rollins peanut, popcorn
and candy stand out of business.
But the funny part was that By By
is a R. A.....We suppose that
Mr. “Dudder” (that’s what his sis
ters call him) Rye, was in town
over the week end, we saw the
family bus. Papa Rye says he and
son, J. W. went into cahoots with
the car and J. W. got the car and
he got the cahoots! .... We also
suppose Hazel Fincher is still tak
ing her three daily dips in the
pool. They seem to come as regular
as her meals! .... What’s this we
hear about Jeanette B. and Ralph
P? Remember Jeanette, you’re
due back at college in September!
.... That headliner, Billy Crow
ell, is still getting his pictures in
the papers. He rated the Bibb Re
corder last week week because he
seems to ,be the star player on
both the boys’ and men's softball
teams . . . Mary and Louis, Ruth
and Verlon, took a joy-ride Sun
day after. Lyda (kind hearted
soul) stopped along the way and
picked up a little stray dog. P. S.-'
He brought it home and gave it
to his little niece . . . Jackson
Wheeler was mighty anxious to
get a certain person’s address in
Michigan the other day. (A cer
tain little brunette person) . . .
Gene Tarpley almost turned the
old bus over Saturday night when
he rounded the curve. But we
can understand that of course . . .
I He was going to see Jeanette! . . .
FOUND: Every Saturday after
noon, sitting on the cement rail at
the wading pool—Josie and Ray
mond . . They should re-name it
.
Lovers’ Lane . . . Comes in the
mail a clipping and a picture from
the Newport Recruit ... of that
old-timer Grover Irwin. Many of
his friends will be happy to know
that he has been appointed Acting
Chaplain in the U. S. Navy with
the rank of Lieut. Jr. grade. Since
January he has assumed his du
ties as Chaplain of the U. S. S.
Philadelphia. Grover spent his
boyhood in Porterdale and grad
uated from the Covington High
School in 1928. All hands wish
him a pleasant tour of duty on
the U. S. Philly.
So long, folks. See you later.
Now that it’s about time for school
to start again the kids will be
gone all day and maybe our neigh
borhood will get a little peace.
