BEDELL
NOTE—The name Bedell prob
ably at times has been spelled as
Beddell, Bedell, Bedil, Bedill,
and possibly other ways.
The earliest record of this fam
ily in the U. S. (then colonies), is
about 1640, Daniel Bedell and his
wife, Ann (Powell) Bedell. They
probably came from Germany.
Among the names of their chil
dren on record are such as—Dan
iel, Jr., Abraham, Joseph, Ann.
Jeremiah, David, Thomas, Richard
and Mary.
Robert Bedell, possibly the f>>\st
of the family in 1640 was liv’ ig at
Hempstead, Long Island, N. ±.
The earliest record of John Be
dell, (2) occurs in the will of
John James, an early school teach
er of Hempstead, dated March 13,
1660, in which James left to John
Bedell some clothing and money
to keep him in school.
In 1690, John Bedell married
Sarah Southward, (or Southard)
In 1738, one John Bedell was
living in Hempstead, Long Island.

In 1750 there was living in Mor
ris county. N. J., John, Henry and
Benj. Bedell.
In 1790, according to the U. S.
census of S. C., no one by the
name listed.
In 1790, in N. C., no one by the
name, but see Bedale.
Elijah Bedale, (or Bedell) was
living with one son over 16, three
females and some property.
In 1785, in Va., no one by the
name listed—but John Bedgel, (or
Bedel), was living with eight in
family and some property.

listed.
In 1790, according to the U. S.
census of Penna., Gashim and Is
real Beddle, (or Bedell), were liv r—
ing with their families and some

In 1785, according to the

from Thomas Tuckekr, Wilkes
county, Georgia, to Anderson Co
mer, Greene county, Ga.
In 1788, in Greene county, Ga.
Abraham Bedell, J. P., John Cain
and Zerubbabel Williamson wit
nessed a deed from John Burford
Wilkes county, Ga., to James Do
zier, same county.
In 1787, according to the Ame

Sarah Bedell married Curtis Jack
son, bondsman, John Bedell.
In 1793, according to N. Y. rec
ords, Gregory Townsend Bedell,
an American minister, was born on
StJ>en Island, N. Y„ died in Bal
timore, Md 1834. He was the au
thor of several religious books.
In 1808, according to the Mor
gan county, Ga., deed books, John
Bedell, Greene county, Ga re
ceived a deed from Wm. Claiborn
Baldwin county, Ga.
In 1808, in Morgan county, Ga
Benj. B. Bedell, Clarke county
Ga., (formerly in Franklin county
Ga.,) made a deed which was wit
nessed by Jesse Martindale, Pey
ton Smith and Wm. Clark.
In 1862, according to the Amelia

ris, daughter of Mary and Moses
