the main streets and public square of Covington, following efforts
to clear the busy sections to permit traffic. Sun, Wednesday, did
much to alleviate the paralyzed condition of this entire section
of Georgia, which recorded the heaviest snow in more than fifty
years. All schools in the county closed. The Covington Schools
Will open this (Thursday) morning, while county schools will

Pictured above is a scene taken shortly before the Easter
' Sunrise services ended on the public square in Covington. The
. services were held early Sunday morning and were broadcast over
the Red network of the National Broadcasting System through
, Radw Station WAGA in Atlanta. A downpour of rain started to
j fall shortly before the program was completed and continued
1 throughout the remainder of the broadcast. A large number of
‘ people remained, despite the rain, to hear the program which

remain closed until Monday, according to County Superintendent
Ficquett. The prediction of cold weather Wednesday night caused
officials to urge local citizens to use care in the operation of their
cars or in walking out of doors. A number of wrecks have oc
curred in Newton' county as a result of the dangerous condition
of the roads. Motorists report the highways in fair condition, but

Mayor S. L. WaHes and Councilman W. C. MeGahee have just
returned from a meeting of Police Officials of Georgia, held at El
bert on, Ga Many matters of interest to small towns were discussed
and much benefit derived from the visit. Mayor Waites and Coun
cilman MeGahee state they intend to visi-t as many towns of similar
size as Covington and gain as njuch knowledge as possible from their
opeVation, so that they may adopt improved methods used by other
cities wherever possible. Assistant Police Chief Bouchillon also at
tended the convention. .

For the first time in 118 years all the elected officers of
Newton county were elected without opposition. The fact that
the county is out of debt and paying cash may have had some
thing to do with it. Here they are, seated, left to right, Miss
