Meeting of Covington Woman's Club
The January meeting of the
Covington Woman’s Club was held

White. Hostesses for the afternoon
were Mrs. W. O. Patterson, chair
man, Mrs. W. E. Thornley, Mrs.
Edmond Jordan Mrs. Thomas Hay
and Mrs. C. H White.
The assembly hall was bright
ened with bowls of narcissus end
the group was seated before an
open fire. The meeting was opened
with Flag Salutes and the reading
of the Collect. Reports from of
ficers were heard, with Mrs. Hugh
King reading the minutes, which
were adopted, and Miss Sallie Mae
Sockwell giving the tret gurer’s re
port. The corresponding secretary,
Mrs. J. P. Hutchins, reported a
note of thanks written to the city
for work done on building and also
read a card from the club presi
dent, ' who is in Florida, A letter
was read thanking the club for
donation to the “Passive Fenton
Ottley Fund.” It was renounced
the Covington Club had met re
quirements for the year as a Fed
era ted Club. The club voted to
make donations to the student aid
and Ella • H. White funds. Miss
Sallie Mae Sockwell made an in
teresting report on welfare work
done at Christmas. Mrs. Mobley,
in a gracious manner commended

director of the Emory at Oxford
Glee Club, with a quartet of the

for the afternoon. He spoke on the
unique subject, “Fiddling While
Rome Burns,” or “Roasting Mr.rsh
mallow's While the World Burns.”
He developed his topic into an in
! teresting analysis of religion, edu
j cation and intelligence at work for
peace and democracy. He stated,
1 “We are now living in a world of
substitutes, we cannot substitute
science for conscience and only s,
conscience against, war can assure
us of peace.”
The program was concluded with
readings by Mrs. Patterson and
j Mrs. Thornley. Sandwdches and
| coffee w'ere served by the commit
I tee.

while and spoke most interestingly
about the work.
A salad course with tea was
served by the hostess and the com
mittee, Mrs. S. L. Waites, Mrs.
Reuben Hull, Mrs. Henry Bran
! ham, Mrs T. U. Smith, Mrs.
C. Wright and Mrs. J. E. Philips,
Tanner composed the quartet and
sang two spirituals, “I’ve Been
Listening” and “I Know the
Lord.” Mr. Eady rendered a trum
pet solo, “Believe Me If All Those
Endecring Young Charms.” This
was followed by two violin
“Ave Maria” and “The Negro
Chant” followed by Jack Burnette
with Mrs. C S. Forester at the
piano. The quartet then sang
“Stars of the Summer Night” and
“The Old Gray Robe.”
The hostseses, Mrs. H. M. Thom
son, Mrs. M. R. Gardner and Mrs.
W E. Black, served lovely refresh
ments of tomato juice, sandwiches,
crackers and nuts.
