Those girls kept our high scoring

two .games. Martin, Hambly and

we have to recognize these great

Palmer Stone also used some

Friday night a record crowd saw
the Porterdale and Covington High
basketball game. This weg one of
the largest crowds ever to see a
game in Porterdale and surely the
largest to see a game this year. A
crowd of about 500 crowded into
the Porter Memorial Gym to see
the game. The game proved to be
an even affair as th% Covington
girls and Porterdale boys were vie
torious. The sportsmanship in this
game was above average. The
teams both had a little of the fight
mg spirit in their hearts, but they
all forgot the little quarrel that
happened in Covington in the last
game and all played a very good
and clean game. This game was the
third straight for Porterdale. PHS
has won games from Loganville,
Palmer Stone and Covington in the
seeond half. Other league games
with Livingston and Social Circle I
were postponed and will be played
later. 1

COVINGTON GIRLS EASY
VICTORS
By Don Brumbaugh
On last Friday night the Coving
ton girls traveled to Porterdale tnd
scored s, surprise victory over the
PHS girls. The Covington girls ran
away with the PHS girls by the
score of 27 to 9. In the last game
the Covington lassies won by a
two point margin. The change of
courts was thought to be of ad
vantage to the PHS girls, but Capt.
Pat Patterson and her team mates
were jus?off. Hazel Henderson and
Bitsy Bradshaw ran away with the
PHS gals. Henderson and Brad
shaw shot from all over the court
and usually sinking their shots,
Henderson had 13 and Bradshaw
collected 11 for this runaway. Gen
eral Benedict led the PHS girls
with 6 out of the nine points. Pat
terson had 2 and Martin got the
other one. The very good guarding
of Sally Cook and Mildred Boxx
accounted largely for the victory
Boxx was all-league and she real
ly showed that she deserved that
post. Geraldine Bates also had a
big part in the guarding.

j the score of 21 to 8, This game was
a surprise to all sport writers fjid
fans. Covington won the last game
I by the score of 19 to 8. With this
margin of victory the Porterdale
lads weren’t even expected to
come close. Covington also had an
other star that didn’t play in the
last game in the person of Charlie
Smith. Smith was a good player,
but the Porterdale guards took
care of him as well as Ffis running
mate Burt Vardeman. Harry Faulk
ner, All-League center, wrs cut
down to only 2 points. Cleon Wi
ley, another All-Leaguer, didn’t
have much to brag about after the
game. Porterdale’,s attack was led
by old faithful Doc Burch, who
rang up 8 points in spite of the Ret
that a cold had nearly closed one
eye. Monk Moody, the little scrap
per of Porterdale was in there be
sides getting 4 points. Ben “Eagle
Eye” Reynolds started the ball
rolling in the third quarter with
two consecutive long shots. After
this start Porterdale just rolled up
a big score and then they just
froze the br,ll. Hubby
the star of the victory over Logan
vilie, was in there fighting and got
3 points. Bill Bowden was the first
boy to guard Smith and kept him
to 3 points. Don Brumbaugh took
over the second half, also scoring
2 points. Jake Hilton played a good
game at center. Faulkner took £ 11
of his time but he did a good job
anyway. Coach Brumbaugh is to
be commended on the way bis boys
took over the situation after they
had a good lead. When the score
was 17 to 7 near the end of the
third quarter the PHS cagers put
on a show of freezing the ball that
has never been seen in this part
of the country. Covington was so
anxious to get the bail that they
rollad up a total of 7 personal fouls
in the last quarter trying to get
the ball. But instead of t£king the
foul shots the Purple and Gold
boys just took the ball out
bounds so Covington couldn't get
the and SCO re. Covington had
a 7 to 7 tie at the half and they
j , got only one point in the last half
and that came in the first few min
utes of the third qutrter when Wi
ley dropped the ball through the
net.

a fast one on Porterdale by start

the PHS girls. Ewing, who played
in the last game but didn’t do
much, was all over the court. Polk

the last game were almost lost in
the scramble for victory. The PHS
lassies seemed to have had a night

was. Pat Patterson saw action after
a six game rest period. Betty Mar
