cleaned up.
The next contest was a hard
fought battle by the High school
boys. The boys won 19 to 14 in a
thrilling contest with Monk Moody
leading the scoring with 7 points.
Capt. Doc Burch collected 6 while
Hubby Shropshire got a 4 po.nt
scoring record. Railing led the
Columbus boys by a 5 point tally
while Reeves oollected 4. Dimm
only got three after a 13 point tal
ly in the morning game. Jack
Woods the team star, was guard
ed closely by Bill Bowden and he
failed to get anywhere near the
basket. Sampsy Pitts had so much
trouble with Hubb Shropshire that
he gave up trying to score after
the third minute was complete. As
the boys were winning the dis
aster of the day came through
with the Porterdale Volley Ball
team falling before a strong Ma
oon team. The final count was
22 to 18 so the girls weren’t beat
en so bad.
With this defeat the Porterdale
Athletic boys dropped their game
to the Macon men 40 to 28. Howard
Moore led the winners with 15
points. Rogers got a 7 for his
scornig duties and Jackie Dunham
got 5. Fred English and Gib Hol
ifield were tied for Porterdale
scoring honors with 7 each while
Howard Brumbaugh had 6. Archie
“Arrowhead” Patterson got 4 for
Ihe day. Patterson had time to
get up the court this game before
the bail was shot. The Macon men
were faster than our boys and our
boys were a little off their game.
This is the third consecutive
year that Porterdale has cleaned
up the Bibb tournament. The other
two years the games were played

six out of eight events in their
back pockets. The Athletic boys
and the Volley Ball girls were the
ony teams to lose. The first game
saw the PHS girls run all over
Columbus by a 19 to 7 count
Coach Thornton used his second
string girls all during the game.
Betty Martin led the Porterdale
girls with 8 points while Patter
son collected 7. Columbus' scor
ing honors go to Capt. Jane Mc
Gill and Elaine Bynum with 3
apiece. Mildred Elliot got the other
point. For Porterdale we saw a
little girl score her first two points
in two years of varsity ball. Little
Elizabeth Hodge who has stuck
with her coaches through two
years of playing, getting in very
few games. Yesterday she was
awarded for her playing by get
ting her first two points and it was
one of the best shots seen ali sea
son for the ball almost knocked the
bottom out of the basket. Jane
Sammons, another sub, also col
lected two points.
The next good news came when
Porterdale's two hundred ping
pong players walked away with
the ping pong games. Coach Ralph
Thornton defeated Williams for
his title. Melba Bonner also came
through to win the gil ls ping pong
title. The Porterdale girls then
took over the Columbus thrilling girls with J

Grady Bowden seems to be hav

We can’t wait until we have our

Grady claims to be one of the

Kathryn P. seems to be waiting
until “Zip" finishes at the show
Saturday night.
What’s the confusion betweeen
Mildred and Brice lately?
It seems that Sybil and Soapie

What goes on at the back table

FAME AND 41

As we look over the basketball
situation we find that the teams
that stood out in the sceond half
were the first eliminated in the

Besides this they printed six pro

We want to thank Editor Scoop
Statham for his ass.stance in’ this
project.
Hubby Shropshire and Doc
Burch were the only two fellows
to be picked on every All-League
team sent in. Doc received 81 out
of a possibe 87 while Hubby got 71.
,A funny instance has been call
ed to my attention. It seems that a
certain out of town sports report
er put himself on his All League
while the other representatives
didn't even mention him.
Well the time has finally come
for the Porterdale Athletic Teams
to go to Coumbus and defend
their titles. It looks like they will
have to do some tall playing to do
much.
Two Gun oprayoerry seems to

three other boys told him that they
had dates with the same girl. Two
Gun wants to go the night before
to make sure that he gets there
first.
Next years team will have as
its backbone three of this year's
varsity. Hubby Shropshire, All
League guard, will return as will
his running mate Bill Bowden
from the second All-League team.
Jake Hilton of the sophomore chass
will also be back for his third
year. Boy oh boy what luck.
Well Mansfield hasn’t exactly
let Newton County down for both
the High school teams walked
away with the Class “C” cham
pionships of the Fifth District. We
want to salute both coaches, Mr.
Whitlow Richardson and Mrs. J.
B. Spears Jr. for their fine work.
Both these teams can boast that
they don’t have a star but a full
team of fine players. The boys
varsity is composed of Robert
Stanton, a fine guard and a good.
Robert Curtis, this boy ran circles
around the League Tournament
teams. Edward Curtis, brother of
Robert and a very good pivot shot
and a good guard. Charles Elliot,
a very dangerous man once given
the chance to brefck for the basket.
Also we have Edward Smith, one
of the best offensive guards in
this part of the country. Smith is
a good ball handler and a fine
passer. The girls team is made up
of Mae Harwell at forward. Mae
