Newton Memories
By. J. O. MARTIN
The Fourth of July Celebration
held at Salem Camp Ground re
cently and which has now become
an annual event there, is a carry
over of the old Oak Hill Fourth
of July Celebration in West New
ton.
It is remembered that there was
almost no Fourth of July obser
vances held in the south for many
years following the Civil War and
the Reconstruction Period. The
iouth seemed to turn to Christ
mas Holidays as a time for cele
brating with the shooting of fire
works as a part of it.
However, the Oak Hill Celebra
tion was observed, according to
information given by Prof. Clyde
Hicks, as far back as 1885. Dur
ing this year, Mr. T. W. Hicks,
Mr. P. G. Turner, Mr. Alfred
Livingston and Congressman Lon
Livingston organized the “Oak
Hill Sunday School Celebration”
in an effort to bring the Sunday
Schools and people of West New
ton closer together in a social, re
ligious and patriotic manner. Five
or six Sunday Schools, Presbyter
ian, Methodist and Baptist, par
ticipated in the event taking place
at the large open tabernacle erect
ed at the personal expense of Mr.
T. W. Hicks, near his home.
The programs included singing
and declamations in the morning
while the afternoons were devot
ed to patriotic speeches.
The Sunday Schools vied with
one another during the year in
matters of attendance, song selec
tions, harmony of music and Spir
itual effectiveness.
The crowds at Oak Hill were
estimated to be from 2,500 to
5,000, the attendance varying ac
cording to the weather and the
programs arranged.
Through the influence of Col.
Livingston, numbers of speakers' j
of wide reputation were brought
here for the occasion. It was al
ways considered an honor for
any person, anywhere, to be in

■ program,
After 0.1. Livingston’s death
and the death of other leading
citizens of the community and the
advent of the automobile which
carried the people to more distant
places, the attendance declined
and in 1920 the occasion was aban
doned. About one year ago the
famous old tabernacle, in which
the celebrations were held, was
torn down, but the spirit has been
transferred to the Salem Celebra
tion which is destined to cover a
wide scope in its activities.
The reigious and cvic influence
was widely felt in the Oak Hill
section during the years. On one
occasion Col. Livingston said to
me that at least seventy-five per
cent of the membership of the
churches ot Hopewell, Bethany,
Prospect and Zion had family
prayer either morning or evening
and that there had not been a
case in court by anyone, white or
colored, during the previous
twenty-five years. That was back
in 1909 when I was a teacher in
the old Livingston High School,
and certainly there was a spirit
that approached the divine in civic
and religious pride that was not
excelled in ‘my memory of that
day.
