The maiden flight of the gigantic B-19 army bomber was also
the first test flight of the worlds largest and strongest airplane tires.
One of the two Firestone 96-inch tires is show here being retracted
for the first time into the plane, where it lodges in a space roomy
enough to house a small army scout car. An idea of the load these
tires must carry may be obtained from the facts that fuel for one
the ship's 7,750-mile cruises will weigh 33 tons, and that the plane
transport 18 tones of bombs in addition to its crew of 10 officers
men.
