D. Bolton had both told me of
getting letters from him . . . She
didn t like that, so you had better
keep up with ALL your girls, Bill.
First Aid: Yowser, Yowser!
First Aid everywhere and not a
patient to treat! We’ve bandaged
ihe Boss from his head to his toes
• • • and Golly, even the Teacher
laughs when we say, “Now isn’t
that bandage pretty!” Who ever
heard of a pretty bandage, sez the
Boss . . . Now listen folks . . . I’m
prouder of my pretty bandages
than any other artist (ahem!) is of
his work . . . Howard Chandler
Christy thinks his work is pretty
. . . but his job is painting pic
tures . . . they are pretty . . . but
fer bandages my work is jest as
pretty as his is . . . and if the
Teacher and Boss don’t think they
are pretty . . . that’s our story
and we stick to it . . . we have not
had a bandage with blood ooooz
zzin’ out of it yet however, that
might be a different story , . . but
while we are lying up here in bed
with a four-tail bandage no this
"Flu” nose of ours (students,
that's another use for the four-tail
bandage . . . and it’s excellent for
Hayfever . . . you know when you
can’t turn the thing loose to do
anything else . . . just put a four-
THE COVINGTON NEWS
tail on it), we have plenty of time
to practice putting bandages on
our hands and arms and feet . . .
and they actually make you feel
better whether there’s anything
wrong or not . . .
The second class of First Aiders
(but they are first class first
aiders) are about to come to the
exciting part of their course . . .
the climax , , . and then the
teacher, Dr. Wm. D. Travis,
swoops down on them with a Test!
You gotter pass, too, to be a first
aider , . . Yes, siree! He might
like to show a little partiality . . .
he might like to slip you by
whether you make it or not . . .
just for friendship sake . . . but
no siree.' Uncle Sam w’ith that
big Red Cross is behind that boy
. . . and he has to toe the mark
... so you will read this just be
for time for the Test so get your
book and CRAM FOR DEAR
LIFE! Help him to keep from
flunkin’ you . . . We just heard of
a very prominent society lady in
a nearby town flunkin’ . . . well
now she went at it again ... so
you do the same if you flunk . . .
We took the first course . . . some
of it . . . this nose keeps us out
of lots of things . . . but we went
again a few 7 times this time . . .
and somebody sez, “Did you flunk
the first class and have to come
again.” NO, sez I ... I made
the mistake of drawing a skeleton
on the back of my paper when I
handed it in and putting “My
Teacher’’ under it ... So he has
not even said whether we flunked
or not . . . but said to come in to
the joint meeting of the two
classes and he would let us all
know who passed the first
and those the second time ... so
we will take ours in bed . , . and
we won’t have a book tucked un
der the cover . . . the rascal takes
the book up before the test and
how the Sam Hill does he think
we are going to look up the an
swers, I want to know . . . but I
guess You’d be surprised.
In these times of wars . . . when
such boys as me “ain’t never
mounted to nothin’ nohow” . . . we
often wonder what we were put
here for . . . But we still offer an
apology to Guest and say “God
grant me these: the strength to
do some needed service here;
The wisdom to be brave and true;
The gift of vision clear, That in
each task that comes to me Some
purpose I may plainly see. God
tecah me to believe that I am
stationed at a post, Altho the
humblest 'neath the sky, Where
I am needed most, And that at
last, if I do well, My humble
services will tell. God grant me
faith to stand on guard, Uncheer
