of the season total consumption
would be approximately 9,200,-
000 bales compared with con
sumption of 9,576,000 during
1944-45. Based on 80 hours per
week, spindle activity during
February was reported by the
Bureau of the Census at 113
percent of capacity. This com
pares with 111 percent for Jan
uary, 102 percent for December,
and 122 percent for February a
year earlier. Activity during
February was the highest tor
any month since June, 1945.
The 1945 cotton crop was es
timated as having the lowest
grade index on record but as
having the longest average
staple length. The grade index
was 91.9 (Middling White
equals 100), compared with 93.4
for 1944 and with 96.2 for 1943.
The supply (carry-over crop)
for the 1945-46 season contains
25 percent less of the grades
Strict Middling and higher,
White and Extra White, than
did the supply for 1944-45. This
year’s supply contains 23 per
cent less Middling, 35 percent
more Strict Low Middling, 91
percent more Low Middling and
80 percent more Strict Good
Ordinary and Good Ordinary
than did the supply for 1944-45.
The average length of the 1945
crop was placed at 32.2 thirty
seconds inches compared with
31.9 for 1943. The average
length for this year's crop ex
ceeded that of any other year
since records became available
in 1928, and was in excess of
one inch for the first time. The
supply for the current season
contains 17 percent less of the
lengths 29/32” and shorter; 18
percent less of 15/16” through
1 inch; about the same propor
tion of 1-1/32” through 1-3/32”
and 18 precent less of 1-1/8”
and longer than did the supply
for 1944-45.
Ginnings from the 1945 crop
are expected to total 8,781,455
running bales, including about
214,000 bales yet to be ginned,
according to the Bureau of the
Census. This is 26 percent be
low ginnings of 11,839,366 bales
last year. Ginnings of equival

Monica, Cal., Mrs. Bernice Brown, 43, Van Nuys, Cal., spent two weeks
alone on the uninhabited isle before being rescued by Coast Guardsmen.
Here, comforted by her mother-in-law Mrs. Ethel Moon, she is told that
her husband and a friend were probably lost at sea in the storm that
swamped their boat during a fishing trip. (International)

this time of the year. Transac

through the last quarter of 1946.
Shippers’ offerings of various

were moderate and centered
mainly in western growths. Va

unusually wide, especially for
even running lots, but most dis
