BOWEN’S TRIPPLES BEATS NEWNAN
EAO Tennis Squad
Wins 7 Loses 3
During Season
The Emory-at-Oxford tennis
team has completed another suc
cessful season under the capable
coach, C. Lee Harwell and the
efficient manager, Charlie Moore,
winning seven matches while los
ing only three. Coach Harwell
has coached teams since 1937 and
boasts an overall total of 46 wins
out of 48 matches, making an av
erage of 86 percent.
The intercollegiate, or gold “E”,
was awarded to five members of
the squad; one intramural or
blue “E’ and one manager’s “E”.
Those receiving the gold “E”
were: Harry Cooper, of Pine
Lake; Richard Parks, of Reynolds,
Georgia; Merio Soto, of Guata
malo City, Guatamala: Billy
Cowan, of Oxford, and Emory
Daniel ,of Atlanta. Alvin Gordon,
of Brunswick, won the intramural
' letter, and Charles Moore, of
Hampton, won the manager’s
etter.
The individual records for the
players on the team were: Harry
Cooper, singles (8-2), doubles (6-
1); Richard Parks, singles, (7-3),
doubles (5-3); Mario Soto, singles
(8-2), doubles (5-3); Billy C-wan,
singles (5-5), doubles (6-3); Emory
Daniels, singles, (6-4), doubles (3-
2). Alvin Gordon, Brunswick;
Harold Parker, West Point; and
Bobby Jarrel, Greenville, each
participated in at least one
doubles match during the season.
This year the Emory-at-Oxford
netters defeated the Universityl
of Georgia “B” team (4-3) at Ox-1
ford; lost to Georgia Military
College (3-4) at Milledgeville;
overwhelmed Augusta Junior
College (7-0) at Augusta; and in
a return match trounced Georgia
Military College (5-2). In a trip
to South Georgia, the team tri
umphed over Emory-at-Valdosta
(7-0) and South Georgia College
(5-2). After returning home for
a few days of rest, the team paid
a visit to Ga. Tech, losing to the
Tech Freshman team (3-4).

Off Atlanta

The Covington Blues lost two
and won one this pas* week-end.
They lost to Local 72 from Atlan
ta, 8-7. Friday night and Sunday
they lost to Elberton by a score
of 5-2. Friday night and Sunday
games were two of the best this
(season. Baker pitching 6-hit ball
for the Blues lost one of the best
games yet. on fielding and slow- ,
hiting. The Blues left 18 men on
bases Friday night.
The Sunday game with Elber
ton was a good one. Pratt and
Tarvin combined on the mound
and limited Elberton to 6 hits.

Ben Glanton believes that the
Covington Blues are playing the
hardest schedules of any amateur
ball club in Georgia. There is no ‘
doubt, the Blues miss John
Brown who is out with an injured
ankle. Brown so far has lead the
team with home runs. Mr. Glan
ton says his team is off a little
with their hitting. He says they i
are facing the,best pitching that
any ball club in Covington has
ever faced.
He is expecting trouble this
week-end from Hapeville, Dun
dee Mills, and Mark's Drive-Ins.

Mrs. F. C. Nesbit, Newton
County Field Commander for the
American Cancer Society, this
week said that a final check
show's Newton County well over
its quota in the recent cancer
campaign.
She expressed appreciation to
all whose aid made the drive a
success, among them M. B. Shaw
who did an outstanding job in
the Porterdale Community.

In Winning Two Games
PORTERDALE—T h e Porter
dale Cubs opened their softball
season May 24 by’ trouncing the
Almon Nine, 19 to 7, and on May
28 they practically slaughtered
Joe Burch’s Southside Nine,
which is composed largely of Boy
Scouts, by defeating them sound
ly to the tune of 19 to 8.
It seems that the Porterdale
Cubs have set their sights on
scoring at least 19 runs per game
so if anyone has a boy’s softball
team and are not afraid of getting
shellaced, contact, James Darby,
“Snooks’ Childs, or Cubmaster
• Grove and they’ll arrange for the
game.

The lads who risk life and limb
aboard speeding stock cars are
coming back to Lakewood Speed
way in Atlanta Sunday, Junel2
for another program of stock car
auto racing on the south’s fastest
one mile race track.
In the last stock car program
here Sunday May Bth. ten cars
wrecked, one was towed into the
centerfield lake to extinguish a
fire which resulted from a leak
ing gas line, and more than 15.00
fans saw Olin Allen, of Atlanta,
emerge the victor after a ding
dong battle with Jack Smith, of
Roswell, and Bob Flock also of
Atlanta.
Sam Nunis sponsor of all auto
racing events at Lakewood since
the war, again will direct the ne
xt stock car extravaganza.
The program, Nunis has ann
ounced. will consist of time trial
four 10 mile heat race, a match
race, and a 30 mile sweepstakes
final. Time trials will begin at 1.
p.m. and the first racing event at
3. p m.
According to Nunis, entry
blanks have been forwarded to
all top flight stock car chaffeurs
in the east and south, and more
than 25 drivers and cars are ex
pected to be on hand for the race
The well known speed produ
cer said the three Flock brothers
of Atlanta, Ed. Sample and“ Red”
Byron, Atlanta, and Buddy Shu
man, of Charlotte, N. C. are
among those who received offi
cial entry forms.
Byron the national stock car
racing champion last year was
forced out of competition with a
bad acting motor in the races
here on May Bth.
