Stay South Is
Theme Os Ga.
Banker-Farmer
Some years before the turn of
the century Horace Greely,
noted editor, reformer and pub
licist of his timj (1811-1872), ad
vised young men of that era to’
“G" West, young man, go West.”
Today, however, a prominent
ue< rgia banker-attorney-farmer
is telling young men of this and
other Southern states to “Stay
South, young man. stay South.”
Yes, sir. thats What Atlanta’s

board of the Trust Companv of
Georgia, is advising yoUng men
wanting to enter business or in-,

certain as to the most promising
geographical location in the
country. He unhesitatingly
says: “Stay South!”
This region, in Mr Sibley's
opinion, is just beginning to re
cover f am the devastation of the
War Between the States. Its
people are just beginning to
realize the tremendous advan
tages this section offers for the
development of an even more
flourishing economic structure.
Mr. Sibley has evidenced his
own f lith in the South by re
aining acre and watching it
. pull itself up by its bootstrap..
A native of Milledgeville, he is
the son of James Longstreet
j Sible; a kinsman of the Con
federate general, and Mattie Er
win Sibley.
He obtained a law degree at
the University of Georgia, prac
ticed law in Milledgeville and
later ,n Atlanta, and in 1946
became both president and
chairman of the Trust Company
of Georgia, later de”eloped a
president -om among the offi
c s of the bank. At present,
Mr. Sibley is chairman of the
; boards of the Trust Company
i and its five affiliated banks at
Augusta. Columbus, Macon; Sa
vannah and Rome.
And his banks practice what
' Mr. Sibley preaches about the
great future of Georgia and the
South—they have for years play
ed a leading role in promoting
agricultural and industrial de
velopment. So, young man, if
; you are in doubt about the fu-
: ture, remember this advice:
I "Stay South!”
Georgia Soil Is Good
The U. S. Dept, of Commerce
has ended its 1950 reporting of
crop conditions in Georgia with
a favorable summary. The re
port said soil throughout the
state is in fine condition for
seeding and plowing operations
and for growth and germination
of fall seedings. Small grains and
truck vegetables are in good con
dition.

The earliest known reference to
coal in present United States ter
ritory is that given in the ac
counts of Joliet’s expedition to
the Mississippi River in 1673.
