ward.
You might ask what all this
ftas to do with us here in Geor
gia and the South. Well, f or onp
it determines how w e live It
determ les what we eat; the
type of clothes we wear, and the
Kind of homes we live in. It is
one of the causes for our warm
climate in the South and the
only thing that keeps Great
Britain from freezing over.
There has been a lot of talk
lately about the Gulf Stream
shifting northward.
Since World War II there
have been many developments
to more accurately ehart the
course of the Gulf Stream. One
of these developments is the
bathythermograph. That's a sort
of underwater thermometer.
This device enables us to get
a continuous temperature depth
picture of what is going on at
the moment of observation. A
boat equipped with this can ex
plore the exact course of the
Gulf Stream.
Another war development is
a new method of navigation. It
is called Loran. This method en
ables ships to fix their position
as often as they wish instead of
two times daily. This way drift
can be studied more accurately.
It is an established fact now
that the Gulf Stream meanders
like that little creek near our
house.
Some people believe that
through all this meandering the
Gulf Stream is shifting north
ward. If this is true, and we'll
know sooner or later, it will
mean that we are in for some
drastic changes in the future.
Many of our crops, cotton for in
stance, will no longer be prac
tical. We'll have to plant more
sugar cane and other crops that
thrive in a sub tropical climate.
And wt’ll get more rain.
Come to think of it, the rains
last summer were very much
like tropical rains. They would
come and go away suddenly.
Some days this would happen
several tithes. And our winters,
it seems that they are no longer
cold as they used to be. I can’t
remember in the last few years
any continuous cold spells.
If the Gulf Stream is shifting
northward and a change does
come it will be a gradual change.
I So gradual that we’ll hardly
