Talmadge Urges
Citizens To Help
Build Better Ga.
Declaring that “never before
in our history have we needed a
unified citizenship more.” Gov.
Herman Talmadge, speaking be
fore the recent seventh annual
Georgia Citizens Conference in
/ tlanta, said “all the subjects
with which this conference is
concerned are of vital interest to
all our citizens.”
Following the general theme
of the cons ice—“ Citizenship
in Action”—the Governor spoke
on “Action Programs for a Bet
ter Georgia." He told how Geor
gians today are working to build
a better Georgia tomorrow.
Attended by hundr. Is of
community leaders from all sec
tions of the state, the two-day
conference, sponsored by the
ice. We have machinery, tools,
equipment and men who are ex

Georgia Citizens Council, was
hailed as the “best and most
constructive of its kind yet
held.” Major emphasis was
placed on safety, health, recrea
tion, youth and civil defense.
In addition to principal ad
dresses by nationally prominent
figures, many, separate group
meetings dealing with present
day problems were held through
out the two-day meeting. Top
state, county and city officers,
as well as civic leaders, partici
pated in the discussions.
“Since the last meeting of the
conference a year ago,” Gov.
Talmadge told the large as
semblage, “we have made defi
nite advances in all fields. In
public health our biggest contri
bution has been the consumma
tion of a co-operative hospital
and health center program on
which, up to the present, about
$25-million has been spent.
“Working with local communi
ties and the federal government,
the state has been able to build
many new hospitals and health
centers in towns and cities
where they are needed most.
We are going to carry this pro
gram into many more areas.”
The Governor said many other
im] rovements are needed in the
health line and other endeavors
and that his administration is
constantly striving to bring
about those improvements.
Baffle Looms
For Nickname
Georgia may adopt a new
nickname. Instead of being known
as the “Peach State,” which
South Carolina has bitterly as
challenged during the past few
known near and far
years, we many become
the “Naval Stores Srtate,” At
l£ast, that’s what Georgia’s
turpentine farmers are hoping
for.
Judge Harley Langdale, presi
dent of the American Turpentine
Farmers Association, of Valdosta,
said the new nickname will be
introduced at the January ses
sion of the State Legislature. He
said there is “no excuse” now for
Georgia to continue under the
name of “Peach State” since five
other states outstrip Georgia’s
peach production. At the same
time, he pointed to the fact that
Georgia accounts for 74 percent
of all gum naval stores produced
in the nation.
But, as one statehouse offici
al observed, the turpentine as
sociation’s move may touch off
a pitched battle over the nick
name. He pointed out that other
industries, such as the peanut.
pimento and watermelon, may
believe their product should b*
honored. As a compromise, he
suggested the official name be
rotated yearly to place all out
standing products of the state in
the limelight.
If an official nickname is
adopted by the General Assembly,
it will be the/first time in history.
Although Georgia has been
known alternately as the “Em
pire State of the South,” the
“Peach State,” the “Cracker
State,” and even the “Buzzard
State,” records in the Secretary
of State’s office indicate none
has been written into the re
cords.
Toluol, a by-product of coat,
is used in the manufacture of
TNT.
