I Georgia's total production of
2.370.000 cords in 1951 account
ed for 17 percent of the South’s
output and nine percent of the
nation's ptupwood cut. Georgia
also led all other Southern
states in 1950 with 2.221.300
i cords, th J Commerce Depart-
I ment said.
Reciepts of domestic pulp
wood at all mills in the United
States in 1951 totaled 25,123.000

nished 14.061.100 cords or 50
percent of the total. All South
ern states showed production
gains over the previous year.
THE COVINGTON NEWS
r I Pine pulpwood in the South
| totaled 12,200,000 cords, with
p : hardwood accounting for 1,451,-

107,700 cords.
Pointing out that Georgia
now has twelve pulp and paper

I others under construction, the
Newsletter said.
‘‘With 16 pulp and paper mills
today built or being constructed
in Georgia to make this state
one of the nation’s leaders in
■ this great manufacturing field,
it is also a dramatic economic
fact that Georgia maintained its
leadership in 1951 in the South
in pulpwood production as it

'Mastitis Control'
Results in Record
A barnyard story of rass to rich
es, with a world’s champion milk
production record the payoff, has
been reported by veterinary med-
I ical authorities.
The herione of the story is a
row—Barnes’ Chief Sally—a Guern
sey owned by Allen Meyer, Fargo,
North Dakota.
As a two year old. Sally started
off on a promising milk producing
career only to have mastitis, a
I common udder disease of dairy
cows, to cut in on her production.
Then a herd mastitis control
program was launched. In her
following lactation as a four year
old, her production jumped from
420 pounds to 846 pounds of butter
fat, a world's record for a four
1 year old Guernsey.
The mastitis control program al
so paid off for the other cows to
the herd. Butterfat production for
the 20 milk cows increased from
an average of 375 pounds to 465.4
I pounds.
This increased produetion
amounted to approximately $2,000
worth of additional milk marketed
: annually.
Determine Death Cause,
Bury Carcass, Warning
When a farmer is in doubt about
cause of death of livestock on his
farm, have an accurate diagnosis
made by a veterinarian before
burying the carcass, Dr. Glen
Reed, Michigan State College ex
tension veterinarian advises.
Dr. Reed has some other sugges
tions for reducing the spread of
livestock diseases. He advises
against having the rendering truck
drive onto your farm to pick up
the carcass at an animal if * can
be avoided.
