fine; if not,' you tell them. The
answer is: The shaded area in
California represents what total
Federal government expendi
tures were for the fiscal year
1930 in terms of the total in
come ok people. In other words
the Federal government to 1929
spent for aS purposes a total
■ budget that "could have been
paid by taking the total incomes
of the people to the lower two
thirds of California.
The Shadow Spreads
Need take the black crayon
again. Black out the reat of Cali
fornia, and these states too:
Oregon, Washington, Nevada,
Utah, Montana, Colorado, Idaho,
Arizona, New Mexico, Wyom
ing, North Dakota, South Dakota,
and the upper half of Nebraska, i
Ask your living room audience
I the meaning of this bigger shad
|ed area which now looms as
| about half of the land area of j
I the U. S. A. After they’ve had
| their guesses, give them the I
answer: In 1939, the Federal
l government spent an amount i
i equal to the total incomes of all
! the people living to this big
1 blacked-out area!
And now the last stop to the
game. With the black crayon
blot owt the remainder of Ne
braska and these additional
stale*: Kansas, Oklahoma, Tex
as. Minnesota. lowa, Missouri,
j Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
and half the state of Alabama.
When your quesses are all in,
give the correct answer: If all
the income of all the people re
siding in this huge area of the
U. S. A. were totalled up, it
would be just enough to pay the
present expenses of the Federal
government!
Frightening Growth
That’s “The Shadow!” The
j black area represents the total
burden of the Federal govern
ment upon the population and
resources of {he United States.
|lt is overwhelming to look at.
Now let’s add the burden of
j state and local governments.
With the black crayon or pencil,
i blot out the remainder of Ala
bama, and these additional
states: Kentucky, * Tennessee.
Georgia. Florida, South Caro
lina, and three-fourths of North
Carolina. And you then have
' the total burden of state and
national government on the pop
ulation and resources of the na-
I tion.
, Nothing could more graph
| ically show the frightening
. growth and paralyzing effect of
| a mounting bureaucracy and ex-
I panding government. Our map
j now shows 83 percent of the
I land area, and its population,
pouring every ounce of its hu
man and material resources into
the maws of government. And
that in effect, is what govern
ment is costing the American
people. It is far too much. It is
I ruinous.
The Danger
The basic ingredients of our
American way of life cannot
survive indefinitely with such
an abnormal-sized government.
It will sooner or later eliminate
the right to private property,
which is the keynote of our
capitalistic society; free enter
prise, which ic our dynamo of
progress; and human liberty,
without life itself would be an
empty thing.
“The Shadow” ought to be
played in every living room in .
