Georgia Traffic Deaths
Are Ahead 01 Year Ago
“Changing business conditions
fluctuation of prices, rise and
fall of stock market activities,
and many other happenings m
the financial world often are
attributed to the fact that this
is ‘an election year’,” declared
Director Garland T Byrd, of the
Georgia Citizens Council which
is sponsor of the state-wide
“Operation Safety” program.
“But,” he continued, “the ap-

of traffic accidents with result
ing deaths is one thing that
can’t be laid at the door of an
election year. No, you can’t
blame politics on this unpre
dictable and I might add, dis
graceful behavior.”
Director Byrd said he would
like to be able to report an im
provement in the number of
accidents compared with a year
ago, but such is not the case, As
of mid-September the number
of persons killed in accidents on
the highways and streets totaled
632 compared with 624 in the
same 1951 period, an increase
of eight. Out of that total, the
number of persons killed in rural
areas was 16 fewer, while those
who lost their lives in the urban
centers increased by 25. Yet. the
number of motor vehicle miles
traveled tn Georgia increased
only two percent.
In disclosing these latest
figures, Mr. Byrd called atten
tion to the fact that, with schools
