champions for the past two sea
sons, the Hanes team boasts over
50 consecutive triumphs, hav
ing four All-Americans in their
starting line-up and claim the
greatest player in women’s
basketball today in Lurlene
Greer, six times All-American
star. Greer was selected the
outstanding player in last year's
national tournament and made
the All-American team for the
6th consecutive year. She ranks
with the greatest players of all
time and is generally considered
the best player in women's
basketball circles.
Eckie Jordan, 5-foot 2-inch,
three times All-American for
ward is another sensational per
former on the Hanes team and
many rate her as the best player
in basketball.
Eunies Futch. All-American
guard, at 6 feet 4 inches, is one
of the tallest players in women's
basketball. She is a fine all-

Hazel Starrett Phillips has
won the National Free Throw
Championship for the past two
seasons and also was selected
‘Miss Southern Softball.” Sara
j Parker Stroud. All-American
guard; Jennie Morris, a fine
forward; Tex Selle, a big rug
ged guard; Joyce Mueller, and
Mildred Little are other fine
players who will see action a
gainst the Tomboys.
The Tomboys rate as one of
the best teams in this area and
have won nine games against
one defeat (to Amarillo, Texas),
j but avenged this defeat with an
easy win over the Texans in a
return game. They have defeated
the Atlanta Peaches, another
highly rated team, twice al
ready this season, once by a
score of 47 to 30.
Ethel Abbott and Faye Bruce,
two very speedy forwards will
team with 6-f<v>t pivot star
Jeanelle Torbert at the forward
positions for the Tomboys, while
lanky Joyce McClung, a 6-foo'
rebounding specialist will line
up with rugged Mickey Clifton
and colorful Margaret Hanson
at the guard positions. Mary Pip
kin. a clever forward or guard;
Jo Fitzgerald. guard; June
Traylor, forward, and Anita
Perry, guard, will also see action
for the Tomboys.

Knight Funeral
Held Saturday
Last rites for Luther Knight,
47, of Mansfield, were held Sat
urday, December 27. at 2:30 P.M .
at the Mansfield Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Bill Cagle
officiating. Interment was in
the Carmel Cemetery.
Odell Knight, Melton Knight.
Otha Knight, Homer Mooney
han. James Jones, and Robert
Kenerly served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Maggie Mooneyhan Knight;
seven children. Mrs. Bill Dick
son, of Covington, and Sammy
Knight, Larry Knight, Kenneth
Knight, Sarah Knight. Sallie
Knight, and Lottie Knight, all
of Mansfield; one brother. Perry
Knight, of Fairfield, Alabama:
three sisters. Mrs. James Lem
monds, Mrs. Rudolph Garner,
and Mrs. J H. Dalton Jr., all of
Social Circle, and several nieces
and nephews.
The NEWS extends sympathy
to the members of the bereaved
family. E. L. Almand Company,
Social Circle, was in charge of
funeral arrangements.
Mrs. Foster Lazenby and Mrs.
William Frederick spent the
Christmas holidays in Atlanta as
the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Whelchel. Friday evening Mrs.
Frederick attended Open House
given by Mrs. Gertrude Blanch
ard. Mrs. E C Roberts returned
with Mrs. Lazenby for a short
visit.

Mr. Hewell Honored
At Birthday Party
PORTERDALE—The home of
D. D. Hewell was the scene of a
gala affair in honor of Mr Hewell
on his seventy-second birthday.
The Christmas motif was carried
out and a beautiful birthday cake
was the centerpiece for the table.
Mr. Hewell received many
lovely gifts. His friends and
family are wishing for him many
more happy birthday cele
brations.

Cpl. Jerry C. Rabun
Stationed At Benning
FORT BENNING. Ga — Cpl.
Jerry C. Rabun, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Rabun. 404 Hopkins St.,
Covington, is a member of the
30th Infantry Regiment at Fort
Benning.
Rabun's unit, plays an active
part in demonstrating battle
tested techniques to students at
the world famous Infantry !
School.
Harwell Rises
In Mansfield
Last rites for Mrs. L. L. (Emma)
Harwell, 92, of Mansfield, were
held Sunday, December 28, at
the First Methodist Church in
Mansfield, with the Rev. T. W.
Taylor, assisted by the Rev. H. B.
Landrum, officiating. Interment
was m the Starrsville Cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, L. C.
Harwell, of Mansfield, and Jim
Harwell ,of Tampa, Florida; three
daughters, Mrs. Willie Lunsford
and Mrs. R. L. Epps, both of
