A Happy And Prosperous New Year
Your editor and employees of The Cov
ington NEWS and Radio Station WMOC
wish each of our subscribers, each of our
advertisers and all of our friends a Happy
■nd Prosperous New Year.
All indications point to a good year,
but it will be just what we all desire to
make it. Those of us who continue to
look forward with confidence and faith
in the Supreme Being will have a good
year. Those who enter the New Year'with
doubt and fear will probably end it in the
»ame condition.
Many are disturbed regarding the
change in administration. We can see no
good reason for this, because of the fact
there is really no change in the admini
stration. There has been a new President
elected and he will appoint a new Cabinet
and they will continue the prosperity with
which our nation has been favored for
many years.
Some fear a Republican administration
but, as far as we can determine, there is
no such thing as a Republican or Demo
cratic administration in a true sense of
the word. There has been elected a new
President who happened to run on the
Republican ticket, but this should in no
way affect the continued prosperity of
our nation.
The words. Republican and Democratic,
formerly stood for certain types of govern
ment which were as far apart as the Poles.
The new Republican and Democratic Par
ties could not be recognizable if they
were studied along the true Party lines.
Both the Republican and Democratic
Parties have changed to such an extent
where, as Parties, they cease to exist.
Therefore, this change in ■ administration
is just a change in personnel of Govern
ment, and we expect no radical changes
in the administration of affairs of our na
tion.
To be more explicit, four years ago
General Eisenhower was urged to run on
the Democratic ticket, but preferred to
Lake City, Florida Gives
Out-Of-Town Shoppers Christmas Present
We were amused recently in coming |
through Lake City. Florida a few days
prior to Christmas time to see all of the
parking meters covered with a bag on
which was printed. “Merry Christmas
from Lake City merchants and Junior
Chamber of Commerce.”
The Lake City merchants and the
Junior Chamber of Commerce realized
that parking meters were liable to keep
people away from stores during the Christ
mas shopping season.
To make it more convenient for them
to come and shop in stores in Lake City,
they decided to eliminate parking meters
from any charge during the Christmas
shopping season.
This illustrates more than we could
write what we have so often said—that
parking meters drive people away from
the stores of the city in which they are
used.
This elearly illustrates also that the I

। remain in service where he was so badly
needed at that time. History records that
four years later he did run and was elected
on the Republican ticket. This evidences
the fact that a man may run on any ticket
and still maintain the conduct of our na
tion in the manner in which it is now con
ducted.
We believe President Eisenhower will
clean up to a great extent some of the
very bad actions of the Truman Admini
stration and will do his best to provide an
honest and efficient Government for our
nation.
That he ran on the Republican ticket
means very little. His real platform was
to stop the waste and extravagance of the
Truman Administration.
Any administration which continues
in power too long is liable to be corrupt
to a certain extent. This may or may not
have been the case, but we all realize the
nation needed a change in administration
and, although we did not vote the Repub
lican ticket, we still believe President Ei
senhower will be an efficient and capable
leader of our nation.
We believe business conditions will
continue to be good. We cannot see how
our Government can fail to see the vital
necessity of good business continued, due
to the fact the nation owes so much money
and needs so much taxes that they cannot
afford to allow business to deteriorate in
the least degree.
Those writers who make a study of
business conditions throughout the nation
all agree 1953 will continue to be a good
business year. Those of us who have con
fidence in our nation will continue to be
progressive to the point that 1953 will be
a good year.
We should all enter 1953 with confi
dence and faith in our National Govern
ment and confidence and faith in ourselves
and continue to strive for more and bet
ter business. In that way, and in that
way alone, will we receive the fruits of
our labors.

merchants of Lake City, Florida and the!
Junior Chamber of Commerce of Lake
City, Florida realized this fact and were
trying to eliminate this nuisance during
the Christmas shopping season.
In our mind, this also proves the fact
that parking meters do more harm by
driving people away from the city in
which they are used than they do good in
bringing revenue to the city. This is
particularly true in small towns such as
ours and it has been proven by the many
small towns which discontinued using
parking meters after giving them a trial.
Parking meters are a detriment to any
small town and are often sold only as a
system of taxation and palmed off as a
convenience. This seems to have been
proven by the fact the Lake City mer
chants wanted to entice country people
into town to trade and therefore eliminated
the charge for parking meters during the
Christmas shopping season.

ignated time.
The new Une has been con
structed as an important project
in Southern Bell’s activities to
extend and improve telephone
service in farm areas. Projects
to take telephone lines into more
and more sections are being de
veloped as rapidly as possible,

The new line will go into serv
ice with 101 subscribers. The
final work of furnishing tele

Ford's Golden Jubilee Tractor
Goes On Display Here January J
The new Golden Jubilee Model
Ford Tractor described as the
most modern farm tractor ever
built with hydraulic controls and
three-point linkage for imple
ments will go on display Satur
day, Jan. 3, 1953. at the McGuire
Tractor Company, Covington, ac
cording to W. T. McGuire.
The new tractor, marking the
50th Anniversary of Ford Motor
Company, not only is more pow
erful, but larger and heavier
than the popular Model 8N which
it replaces. More than 500,000
Model 8N tractors have been sold
since their production started in
1947. The over-all length of the
new tractor has been increased
to 120 inches and its weight to
2,510 pounds. It is powered by
the entirely new overhead valve
Ford “Red-Tiger” engine.
Streamlined design gives it the
appearance of leaning ahead,
ready to .go to work. It has the
familiar dawn gray and vermil
lion red color scheme.
A new design feature is the
full-view instrument cluster set
! in a raised section of the hood
for the convenience of the opera
tor. Instruments include the ex
clusive Proof-Meter, ammeter,
temperature gauge and oil pres
sure gauge.
The Live-Action Hydraulic
J System built into the Golden
Jubilee Model to provide me
chanical muscles for a wide va
riety of work, has been improv
ed for greater power and faster,
more accurate operation. In
stead of the “cavitating” system
used in previous Ford Tractors,
the new model introduces a solid
system completely filled with
oil at all times, which provides
split-second response to controls.
The hydraulic mechanism pro
vides both Implement Position
Control and Constant Draft Con
trol at the flick of the Selector
Lever, features of previous Ford
Tractors that have met wide ac
ceptance by farmers. The fast
er acting system allows quicker
automatic corrections for changes
in soil conditions, for example
in plowing, and also provides
quicker, more positive control
for other hydraulically controlled
farm operations.
The hydraulic pump itself is
a live pump driven directly from
the engine, providing a constant
source of hydraulic power while
the engine is running without
necessitating the engagement of
the clutch, thus eliminating many
gear shifting operations. The
new pump is simpler in design
and can be serviced without dis
i trubing other parts.
i The Golden Julbiee model hy
draulic system lifting power has
been increased to approximately
1,000 pounds at the drawbar.
A notable advancement in the
hydraulic system is Hy-Trol,
which gives the operator a choice
lof hydraulic operating speeds.
Hy-Trol is the key to greatly in
creased efficiency in operating
] many mounted tools and remote
cylinder controlled tools.
Another available feature is
; Selec-Trol. A flick of the Selec-
Trol lever instantly directs the
hydraulic power to either a front
or rear-mounted tool. This per
mits operation of a front-mount
! ed Dearborn Standard Loader
and rear-mounted tools by the
1 same handy Hydraulic Touch
Control Lever without the neces
sity of buying an extra hydrau
lic pump.
A convenient outlet at the top
I of the hydraulic lift cover per
। mits mounting of a remote con
trol valve for the operation of
either single or double acting re
mote hydraulic cylinders to sup
ply power to control combines,
' corn pickers and other remote
control implements.
The new Ford Tractor can be
equipped with a Live Power
Take-Off attachment which per
mits PTO driven implements to
be operated continuously wheth
er the tractor is moving or stand
ing still. This eliminates much
gear shifting as well as the ne
cessity for dismounting from the
tractor to clear clogged corn
pickers or combines.
The completely new four-cyl
inder overhead valve FoFd “Red
Tiger” engine develops ample
reserve of power which brings
heavier farm jobs well within
! the economical working range of
the tractor. It develops high
torque necessary to start loads
and keep going.
Costly engine friction has been
minimized by increasing the cyl
inder bore and shortening the
piston stroke. This means more
power and longer engine life.
Pistons are the autothermic type,
made of an aluminum alloy and
I cam ground. Dry alloy cylinder
sleeves are used.
The carburetor has been recali
brated for greater efficiency
’ throughout the complete range
of engine speeds. A new,higher
] volume oil pump maintains ef
fective oil circulation even at
| low engine speeds. The oil fil
ter is the full flow type.
| Increasing the wheel baee to
73-7/8 inches, coupled with the
heavier engine, has given the
Golden Jubilee Model improved
stability and nermits the use of
heavier equipment. The front
axle support assembly incorpo
rates a number of mounting holes
for convenient use of front
mounted equipment. A new
front power-take-off drive is
available and simplifies the in
stallation of front end imple
ments such as loaders.
“We are proud to introduce
this great new powerful Golden
Jubilee Model Ford Tractor in
this area,” said Mr. McGuire.
“The entirely new engine, the
advanced hydraulic system and
many other new features make
it ideal for handling a vast ma
jority of the jobs found on the
farms in this area. And most
important of all, Ford’s mass
production techniques and faci
lities make this quality tractor
available at a price that’s right.”
