authentic detail. He arranged the
’ scene in the same coat shed,
which is now preserved at Green
field Village in Dearborn, and he
scattered on the floor the same
tool Henry Ford had used that
night. He had Ford’s own pot
i bellied stove moved to exactly
the same spot kt had occupied in
the shed in 1896.
But until he dropped into the
coffee shop for breakfast, the
problem of finding a model for
Mrs. Ford had him stumped. Then
he looked at the hostess, Frances
Duff. He deceided that she
resembled the young Clara Bryant
Fora more than any woman he
had seen and he wasn't satisfied
until she consented to take time
off from her job to pose for him.
Another painting in the calen
dar shows Henry Ford 11. the
present head of the Ford Motor
Company, standing beside a
small model of his grandfather's
first car. The car itself is still
running but there was no small
rephea of it
Rockwell dug into the flies of
the Ford Engineering Center and
came up with the original faded
blueprint of the car that Henry
Ford drew 57 years ago. He ar
ranged to have a model in Mas
sachusetts exactly as these aged
plans specified.
An outstanding illustration in
। the Rockwell calendar depicts
the 10-year-old Henry Ford m his
second-floor bedroom at the
family's white farmhouse, show
ing a spring-propelled toy wagon
to a skeptical local blacksmith.
The red and white spread on the
' bed is the same one that covered
Henry Ford’s bed in his ehild
‘ hood.
The blacksmith in the picture
however, is not authentic. He is
Bernard Cullinan, custodian of
the school house in Rockwell’s
I home town, Arlington, Vermont.
The model for the boy is Robert
Deßlock, an Arlington school
boy.
Following the theme of the
Ford Anniversary program
Fifty Years Forward on the
American Road”— another paint
ing in the calendar recalls the
excitment that Henry Ford stir
red up in the streets of down
town Detroit before tihe turn
of the century when he frightened
teamster s horses with his new
fangled gasoline carriage.
When he planned that picture,
Rockwell actually had some heavy
dray horses hitched up to 1890-
vintage wagons to make sure that
the details would be correct.

Unusual New Year
Customs Are Still
Observed In Scotland
Neither gaiety nor giddiness
quite describe some of the odd
and ancient customs that color
] the ‘New Year season in Scotland.
On January 12 »t Burghead,
। Morayshire they preserve the
I pagan Yule-fires with “The Burn
ing of the Clavie.” The “Clavie”
is a tarfilled barrel, which is lit
with a flaming brand and carried
round the town. It to then rolled
down a local hillside where
presidents of the company Henry
Ford, Edsel Ford and Henry
Fordll. The calendars will be
distributed by the company’s
dealers everywhere.

The people of Biggar, Lanak

claim with Wick, Caithness, that
their bonfires are bigger and
better than the rest.
But you have to take the trip to
the remote Shetland Island to
see what is perhaps the finest Fire
Festival of all. It’s called “Uphel

of January in Lerwick. Here a
replica of a Norse galley is towed
to the pierhead complete with
crew of Vikings in helmets and
mail, carrying flaming torches.
