Poultry Manure
Good Fertilizer
For Vegetables
Vegetable growers can profit
from the increased poultry pro
duction in Georgia, a University
of Georgia Agricultural Exten
sion Service horticulturist said
. this week.
Dr. Ravmond Sheldrake said
large quantities of poultry man
ure, containing fairly large a
mounts of plant food, are avail
able to vegetable producers
He stated that a ton of un
treated poultry manure, plus
floor litter, accumulated on
poultry house floors in Delaware
averaged 30 pounds of nitrogen
20 pounds of phosphone acid and
I 1R pounds of potash.
“Poultry manure also contains
significant quantities of calcium,
magnesium and other essential
। elements," he revealed
The horticulturist said two
' pounds of superphosphate daily
■ on the previous night's droppings
of 100 hens greatly reduces the
loss of nitrogen from poultry
manure on the dropping boards
Dr. Sheldrake recommended
। using this manure at the rate of
about five tons per acre, applied
preferably in the fall er winter
on cover crops or on grain in
the rotation. “It can also be ap
plied before or after spring plow
ing and worked into the soil,
be added.
“This by-product of Georgia's
huge broiler and egg producing
industry ean be well utilized in
adding to the fertility and pro
ductive ability of our soils.' the
will greatly reduce the fertilizer
vegetable expert asserted. 'And
the proper use nt poultry manure
bill.”
