Circle No. 2 Os Baptist WMS Met
At The Arnold Home Monday Afternoon
Circle No. 2 of the Baptist
W. M. S. met Monday, January
19, at 4 P. M., at the home of
Mrs. R O. Arnold. Mrs. Whitlow
Richardson presided, in the
absence of Mrs. J. L. Bush, chair
man. The meeting opened with
the hymn. “Send the Light.’’
Minutes of the December meet
ing were read and approved. Mrs.
R. H. Patterson gave the treas
urer’s report and received the of
fering. Mrs. C. G. Henderson,
community missions chairman,
gave a list of sick and shut-ins to
be visited during this month.
Covington Garden Club's January
Meeting Held At Home Os Mrs. David
The lovely home of Mrs. A. H.
David was the scene of the Janu
ary meeting of the Covington
Garden Club.
Mrs. R. P Campbell, presi
dent, presided and welcomed
the members and guests and read
tome words appropriate to the
New Year.
Reports form the Christmas
committee were given and this
committee thanked everyone for
the beautiful work done on the
square at the Christmas Season.
The projects committee asked
for suggestions from members
concerning the spring plans.
The progtrim subject for the
afternoon was “Flowering Trees,”
their planting and proper care.
Mrs. C. D. Ramsey introduced
Mr. J, D. McKinsey who ably
discussed this subject with sug
gestions as to flowering trees
suitable for this area.
Mrs. T. A. Rape, accompanied
by Mrs. Sam Gainer at the paino,
very beautifully concluded the
program by singing “Trees,” by
Joyce Kilmer.

“Can we Convince Lost Souls
That God Loves Them?” She
closed the devotional with pray

Mrs. Richardson gave a brief
history of the lives of two South
ern Baptist Home Missionaries
’ serving in the Marshlands of
। Louisiana. They are Miss Evelyn
Stanford and Miss Nina Bell
! Gunn. Mrs. R. 0. Arnold closed
the meeting with prayer.
Delicious cake and coffee were
served at the social hour.
A lovely social hour followed,
with Mrs. Rucker Ginn serving
coffee from a beautifully ap
pointed table. She was assisted
by other members of the com
mittee, Mrs. C. D. Ramsey Jr.,
chairman, Mrs. John Booth, Mrs,
P. W. Pratt, and Mrs. A. H
David.
The “All Green Arrangement’ 1
awards were as follows: Mrs.
Lewis Caldwell, blue ribbon; Mrs.
S. A. Ginn, blue ribbon; Mrs. R.
H. Patterson, red ribbon, and
Mrs. W. O. Patterson and Mrs
Irving Dietz, white ribbons.
Wesleyan Service Guild Meeting For
January Was Held With Mrs. Ruby Loyd
The January meeting of the
Wesleyan Service Guild of the
First Methodist Church was held
at the home of Mrs. Ruby Loyd,
on Middlebrooks Street, with
Mrs. Mary C. Davis and Mrs.
Stella Sumner as co-hostesses.
The meeting was opened with
piano selections by Mrs. Mary
Banks. After the call to worship
the group joined in singing
“Love Divine, All Loves Excel
ling.” Mrs. Jack Meadors, read
scriptures from the Bible.
The business session was pre
sided over by the president, Mrs.
Ma^-y Campbell. The minutes of

tian Service of Allen Memorial
Church met in the Conference
Room at the Old Church for
the January meeting. Mrs. A. L.
Sherwood, president, presided
and opened the meeting by read
ing a poem, ‘The New Year.” The
Rev. Hamby Barton Jr. led the
opening prayer.
The minutes of the previous
meeting were read and adopted.
In the absence of the treasurer,
Mrs. R. E. CowJn gave the
treasurer’s report and collected
dues. A count of circle members
present revealed a good attend
ance from each of the four
circles.
The announcement was made
that the February general meet
ing will be held the night
February 3 at eight o’clock. The
Emmie Stewart Circle will -ar
range the program. This circle
will also arrange flowers in the
sanctuary during the month of

the coming evangelistic campaign
that is to be held throughout the
Southeast, and gave a brief out
line of what would be expected
of each Methodist Church mem

present, and she gave ■ very in
spiring talk, challenging the W.
S. C. S. to better work and
service.
Delicious refreshments were
served at toe social hour. Mrs.
R L. Berry dismissed the meet
ing with prayer.
Legion Auxiliary
Met Monday Night
The Covington Unit, American
Lagion Auxiliary, held its regu
lar meeting Monday night, Jan.
12, at the American Legion
home.
The meeting was oponed by,
unit president, Mrs. Sam Tribble,
and a short business meeting

Mrs. John Chesnut was in

“Civil Defense- J. T. McKay,,
Newton County Civil Defense
director, was guest speaker, and'
gave an interesting talk on the
vital importance of the civil,
defense program m the home,
city, and eounty.
The members were served re
freshments at the close of the
meeting. Mrs. Lowell Hipps, Mrs.
Neal Banks, Mrs. H. O. Whelchel,
and Mrs. Jack Chapman were on
the refreshment committee.
Heard-Mixon Club
The Heard-Mixon Woman’s
Club met January 15 at the
Home Economics Building.
In the absence of the secre
tary, Mrs. Bill Aiken ealled the
roll. Ten members and two visit
ors. Mrs. Ed Aiken and Mrs. Mc-
Gerity, were present.
Mrs. T. C. Reynolds presided
over the business session. Each
member filled out her yearbook.
The meeting was then turned
over to Mrs. Hazel Malone who
gave an interesting demonstra
tion on basket making.

of a contest at the social hour

Held Meeting At Church January 5
The W. M. S. of Calvary Baptist;
Church held their meeting Janu-[1
ary 5 at the church.
The meeting was called to order I
by the president, Mrs. Tilman |
Niblett. Mrs J. I. Alford led the
group in singing the W. M. S.
song, “Christ for the Whole Widen
World.” The permanent and
yearly watchwords were repeat
ed in unison.
Reports were given by each
counselor, the stewardship leader, ■
